We’re focusing on the sounds /or/ (or, ore, oar), /ou/ (ou, ow), and /oi/ (oi, oy). Students will learn how these vowel teams appear in words like roar, cow, and toy. Through games, word sorts, and reading activities, we’ll build confidence in spelling and decoding these tricky patterns!
Reading
Students worked on using Nonfiction Text Features to help them learn more information about a topic. Students read nonfiction books and look for details in photographs. Students also learned about how to identify facts vs opinions in texts.
Writing
Students are engaging in How-To writing to become more communicators and thinkers. They’re learning to organize their ideas clearly, use sequencing words, and consider their audience—strengthening their communication and self-management skills. Each student is choosing a topic they know well and explaining it step-by-step to teach others.
Social Studies
In Social Studies, students will be reflective and identify how the physical environment of their community has been modified to meet needs and wants. We have built homes to adapt to our environment. Tunnels, bridges, and roads are built for transportation. Parks, aquariums, and museums are a place to enjoy nature and history.
Math
First graders will dive into the world of 3D shapes! Through hands-on activities, games, and real-world connections, students will learn to identify and describe spheres, cubes, cones, cylinders, and more. They'll explore the number of faces, edges, and vertices each shape has, while building vocabulary and spatial reasoning. Get ready for a fun-filled adventure with shapes you can see, touch, and build!
Science
This month in science students will observe the sky to see how it changes and how objects move across it. What are some celestial objects that you have observed in the sky? We will also be discussing how shadows are created and the importance of the moon.
