What is ASD?
ASD is another word for Autism.
Autism is a condition, present from early childhood, characterized by great difficulty in communicating and forming relationships with other people and in using language and abstract concepts. Autism often impedes people from understanding social relationships. People with Autism often understand life literally and will not understand figurative language or generalizations.
What is High or Low Functioning ASD?
Autism can be present in severe and less severe forms. This is called a 'spectrum'.
High-functioning autism (HFA) is a term applied to people with autism who are deemed to be cognitively "higher functioning" (with an IQ of 70 or greater) than other people with autism.
Low functioning autism is a form of autism at the most severe end of the spectrum. Individuals who have it often have little or no language skills and many have some level of developmental impairment.
Social skill development is often affected at differing levels. often people with ASD do not make eye contact. Please don't force them to look at you.
Autistic people can have a specialized areas of expertise.
Some areas may include:
Maths skills
Mechanical skills
Art
Languages
Specific subjects
Dismantling and reassembling objects
Working with computers
Autistic people may:
Like linear, less cluttered, structures and organisation
Have difficulty in communicating and struggle to understand body language and social cues
Become obsessive with special interests
Be overly sensitive or under sensitive and not react as you expect a person to
Find change and sudden disruption difficult to deal with
Find making friendships difficult and need to develop socialization skills
May also have additional learning needs such as Dyspraxia or Dyslexia
