A candidate may substitute teach with certain provisions and under the following conditions:
The candidate may substitute only for their cooperating or mentor teacher in planned or emergency situations. The candidate may not substitute for a teacher other than own cooperating or mentor teacher.
The substitution can take place starting in Week 5 of the placement provided they have already demonstrated the necessary competencies.
The supervisor, cooperating or mentor teacher, and school administrator must approve each day of substitute teaching.
If the candidate is asked to substitute for more than 6 days in a 14-week placement, additional approval is required from the supervisor and Student Teaching Coordinator.
Compensation for substitute teaching is governed by each school district policy and is at the discretion of the school district.
Candidates may decline offers to substitute teach.
Undergraduate candidates are not permitted to accept a full-time teaching position or long-term substitute teaching position while enrolled in student teaching.
Graduate candidates who have a full-time teaching position or a long-term substitute teaching position before entering the program or before being assigned a practicum / student teaching placement must contact the Student Teaching Coordinator to request a Residency Agreement Form. This form must be acceptably completed and signed by the graduate candidate, building principal, and mentor teacher, and returned to the Student Teaching Coordinator before the start of the semester.
Graduate candidates who are offered a full-time teaching position or long-term substitute teaching position after being assigned a practicum / student teaching placement must contact the Student Teaching Coordinator to discuss the viability of the position in light of the graduate program requirements. If the position is determined to be viable, the Student Teaching Coordinator will provide the candidate a Residency Agreement Form. This form must be acceptably completed and signed by the graduate candidate, building principal, and mentor teacher, and returned to the Student Teaching Coordinator before the start of the semester in which the position will begin.
