Expectations for attendance in student teaching are based on the NYS Board of Regents regulation that student teaching “be at least a full semester (at least 14 weeks), full time, and in alignment with the daily schedule and annual school calendar.”
Days of Attendance. Candidates are required to attend their assigned student teaching placement each day that school is in session and/or teachers are required to be in attendance as published in the official district calendar.
Hours of Attendance. Candidates are to be present in their student teaching placement the same hours as teachers in the district are contractually obliged to follow.*
Event Attendance. Candidates are expected to attend all events where teacher participation is expected including, but not limited to: faculty meetings, parent-teacher conferences, and extracurricular activities.
Campus Calendar. Candidates do NOT follow the SUNY Oswego campus calendar.
* Note that candidates in residency programs may have modified placement schedules based on class meeting times.
Communication of Required Student Teaching Events and Dates. Dates and times of required student teaching events are communicated to undergraduate candidates during the Academic Review process and again by campus email prior to the start of the student teaching semester. Dates and times of required student teaching events for MST and other residency candidates is communicated by campus email toward the start of the semester in which the event takes place.
Student Teaching Events. Candidates are required to attend all student teaching events (e.g., orientation, workshops) in the manner they are offered (in-person or virtual) and at the time they are scheduled, which may be prior to the start of the semester, prior to the first scheduled day of student teaching, or during the semester.
NYC Student Teachers. Candidates who student teach in New York City will follow the SUTEC calendar and attend SUTEC-sponsored events. They will be invited to attend SUNY Oswego-sponsored virtual events and are encouraged to attend as they are available to do so.
Illness or Unavoidable Emergencies. In the case of absence due to illness or unavoidable emergency, the candidate must contact the college supervisor and the cooperating or mentor teacher as soon as they know they will not be in attendance and as far in advance as possible prior to the start of the school day. The candidate is responsible for ensuring that the cooperating or mentor teacher has lesson plans and necessary materials for instruction the day of the absence. The candidate should provide their supervisor documentation of absences due to illness that exceed three days in a semester. Absences beyond three days will result in the extension of the student teaching placement directly following the conclusion of the semester.
Appointments. With the exception of emergency circumstances, candidates are to schedule appointments (e.g., medical, teacher certification exams), at times when they are not student teaching such as after school, during vacation days, or on weekends. Missed student teaching for non-emergency appointments are counted as absences and will result in the extension of the student teaching placement in the days directly following the conclusion of the semester.
Athletics. Athletes who are members of NCAA Division III athletic teams are to follow the campus Athletic Team Membership Attendance policy, including providing their Supervisor and Cooperating Teacher the list of dates of officially scheduled competitions by the start of the student teaching semester. Athletes may not miss placement or leave early for practice. Athletes are permitted to miss days or leave their placement early for official scheduled competitions. However, if the athlete misses more than three days, the placement will be extended by the number of days missed beyond three in the days directly following the final student teaching date listed on the official SUNY Oswego Academic Calendar.
Athletes who are members of Spring NCAA Division III athletic teams that travel the week of the campus Spring break have two attendance options: (1) They can choose to travel with their athletic team that week and extend their student teaching by five days. These five days are those that directly follow the final student teaching date listed on the official SUNY Oswego Academic Calendar; or (2) they can choose to not travel with their team, in which case, their student teaching is not extended. These athletes should notify the Student Teaching Coordinator, their Supervisor, and their cooperating or mentor teacher of their decision no later than the start of the student teaching semester.
