WUE (pronounced woo-wee) is a program that was created by the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE) to lessen the financial burden of attending an out-of-state college. With WUE, out-of-state students pay no more than 150% of in-state tuition at participating schools, compared with nonresident rates that can exceed 300% of in-state rates. How do I qualify for WUE?
1. Are you a resident of one of the 16 states or US territories that participate? YES!
2. Apply to a participating institution
You must apply directly to the institution and indicate you want to be considered for the WUE discount. There is no WUE application.
3. Meet the institution's WUE requirements
Some schools set more rigorous criteria for WUE applicants. Double-check that you meet your top-choice schools' WUE admissions criteria.
Apply early! Some schools may have an earlier deadline for WUE applicants. Plus each school has a quota of WUE seats they are able to give away. If you apply too late, you could miss out!
