Winnie Wilson

My name is Winnie Wilson. I am a senior at Oxford High School and am also the editor-in-chief of the Charger. I served as a staff writer during the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 school years, and was the associate editor and entertainment editor for the 2021-2022 school year. I also serve as the social media manager and take a variety of photos for the Charger. I participated in the Washington Journalism and Media Conference where I was selected as the executive editor of my boardroom and learned numerous journalistic skills to take back to our OHS newsroom. I have also won awards at previous MSPA conferences throughout the years for design, writing, and photojournalism. I have also taken photos for the Invitation Oxford (a local magazine).  I serve as Oxford High School's student body president and am also a cross country team captain. I am a co-president of our mental health peer to peer advocacy club R.I.S.E., a member of the mock trial team, a founding member and the co-president of our school's recycling initiative, and have spent 500+ hours volunteering within the school as well as the broader Oxford community. I will be attending the University of Virginia majoring in Political Philosophy, Policy & Law and minoring in journalism, hoping to one day become a political journalist after attending law school.

Here, I had the opportunity to introduce and speak about prominent D.C. journalists to a group of around 300 students while attending the Washington Journalism and Media Conference.

Throughout my experience with high school journalism, I have had the opportunity to report on and capture historical events that classrooms around our high school have honored through some sort of memorial.

I have had the opportunity to write numerous articles that have required in-depth reporting. Here, I was taking pictures for a feature that I was writing on a Chinese immigrant who is fearless and dedicated to benefitting society.

Distributing days have always been a highlight of the monthly paper cycle, and sharing our edition completion on social media has always been a fun way for me to creatively gain exposure for the paper.
