Having been appointed editor-in-chief of the Charger has solidified my love for not just journalistic writing but also helping others find a similar passion. I have developed and grown leadership skills such as adaptability, innovation, conflict management, decision making, and critical thinking through my time in this position. As a leader within and outside of the classroom, I have learned the importance of accountability and leading by example as classmates are looking to me for direction and instruction as well as guidance in order to complete daily tasks.
The Charger staff at the beggining of our 2022-2023 school year.
As an editor, I have learned the importance of not just correcting but also teaching. My responsibilities include but are not limited to reviewing articles, contributing to editorials, and managing daily newsroom operations. Shown below is an example of an article that I was editing prior to sending our paper to press. I always make sure that my criticism is both constructive and instructive, and I always ensure that my personal bias and writing style isn't pushed over onto a staff writer in order for all individuals to develop their own writing style.
Monthly, our newsroom completes our maestro. This consists of a class wide article brainstorm where we all work to develop stories for our print edition. I work to lead our monthly maestro in a way that encourages others to share their ideas and opinions regarding story selection to insure that everyone has a say in what article they write for the month. I also encourage staff writers to brainstorm ideas to write weekly for our online edition.
I also work to ensure that all class members are held accountable for their work and are reminded of their deadlines. I always alert members of article check days to make sure that all staff writers are staying on track with their writing and designing.
