Here are some of the most common questions we receive concerning our unit. If you have a question that is not listed below, please send it to us via our Contact Us page.
Question: How old do I have to be to join Civil Air Patrol?
Answer: Cadets must be 12 years old to join. If you or a member of your family is interested in joining, we invite you to attend one of our upcoming Open House events. Prospective cadets must attend 3 meetings before submitting their application for approval.
Question: Can I join if I am over 18 years old?
Answer: The Civil Air Patrol has a senior member (adults) program for those at least 18 years of age. If you are 18 but not yet 19, you can join as a cadet and remain a cadet until age 21. However, we encourage your to learn more about joining our squadron as an adult member. Our senior members are actively involved as well, and they meet at the same time and place as the cadets. Adults wishing to join may attend any meeting night for a face to face introduction to the program and facilities.
Question: How much does it cost to join the cadet program?
Answer: Initial Cadet Membership applications are completed online with a $30 fee. Additional expenses may be required for equipment, uniform pieces, and some special activities. Our squadron will work with cadets to try to minimize costs.
Question: How much will my uniform cost?
Answer: Uniform costs vary. Our squadron does its best to maintain a large supply of ABUs. You will be fitted and issued one from our stock. You will likely need to purchase black combat boots and nametapes. We sometimes have second-hand boots and dress shoes available, but not at all times. CAP does offer a voucher to assist you in purchasing blues uniform items once you have completed your first achievement (the Curry Award) in the cadet program. We will discuss uniforms and cost at time of enrollment.
Question: Do I have to attend every meeting to participate in CAP?
Answer: While we understand that cadets are involved in a variety of activities, in order to receive the full benefit of what the Civil Air Patrol program offers, we encourage cadets to maintain regular attendance to both weekly meetings and special activities. Our structure is based on a squadron formation and leadership responsibilities that are held by our cadets. The cadets also move through the program by promoting through a rank structure. In order to promote on time, cadets must attend a minimum of 4 out of every 8 meetings. Please take this into account when considering membership.
Question: How do I obtain access to Andersen Air Force Base in order to attend the meetings?
Answer: Base access is currently being handled through our Adult Members. Cadets younger than 16 can travel on base without special permissions. However, cadets 16 and over and parents/guardians must pass a background clearance check with security forces at the 36SFS. If you are interested in joining and need access to Andersen Air Force Base, please email joshua.plummer@os.cap.gov.
