WHAT CAN YOUNG PEOPLE DO:
Learn and Practice Techniques to Manage Stress and Difficult Emotions
May is Mental Health Month. This month aims at raising awareness of trauma and the impact it can have on the physical, emotional, and mental well-being of children, families, and communities. Mental Health Month was established in 1949 to increase awareness of the importance of mental health and wellness in Americans' lives, and to celebrate recovery from mental illness. Mental health is essential for a person's overall health.

Happy Spring:) Spring is the perfect time to renew and re-energize for the rest of the school year! One skill you can incorporate into your day to be more present and reduce stressed or anxious feelings is to practice focused breathing. Try spending a few minutes a day putting this skill into practice!
Here's how...
Focus your attention on your breath, the inhale and exhale. You can do this while standing, but ideally you’ll be sitting or even lying in a comfortable position. Your eyes may be open or closed, or you can maintain a soft gaze, with your eyes partially closed but not focusing on anything in particular. Notice that after doing this for a few minutes you feel lighter and more at ease to take on what comes next.
March 2nd is observed as World Teen Mental Wellness Day – a day to raise awareness about the mental health struggles that teenagers encounter. it is important that we normalize the conversation around mental health.
Members of the student services team; Mrs DiBenedetto, Mrs. Massey, Miss Catie and Mrs. Young can help provide you with the tools to maintain mental wellness.
Feel free to stop in to the Studnet Services office if we can be of help to you or a friend.

The idea behind Random Act of Kindness Day is to cultivate feelings of kindness and brighten someone's day. Every small act of kindness is significant. One act of kindness can lead to more positive outcomes. Don’t hold back from uplifting others with compliments and compassion on this day.

Empathy is a skill you can develop and grow that will impact how you react and respond to others and how successfully you build relationships. Guidance counselors visited 6th grade classrooms to discuss how Empathy fuels connection.
Happy National Gratitude Month!
Practicing gratitude can improve your emotional and physical health. Try making a daily effort to focus, notice, and reflect on things you are grateful for. Research supports making this a year round habit because it helps improve your relationships and overall happiness!
Give it a try for a few weeks and see how you feel!
Being there and showing support for one another helps people feel less alone! When you show you care, it can take someone from feeling hopeless to feeling valued and respected.

Peer support Makes a Difference!
Respond to classmates and friends with intentional acts of kindness, acceptance, and inclusion
Here are some ways to be intentional with your support:
Speak up, your words matter. Try saying:
"I’m here for you and I want to help"
"You didn’t deserve to be treated that way"
"You are a good person in a bad situation"
"It was wrong of that person to do that"
"Can I help you find an adult to talk to"
Listen without judgment
Let them know they have the right to talk about what’s happening
Ask questions that allow them to talk through their experience and emotions
*Want to tell me what happened?
*How are you doing?
*What would be helpful to you right now?
Show empathy for what they are experiencing
React with support and compassion
Tell them it’s not their fault
Help them think through how they can tell others about their experience
Encourage them to reach out to a parent or other trusted adult

October is National Bullying Prevention Month. According to recent data, one in five students report being bullied.
Here at Brady we have the opportunity to change this statistic by choosing kindness and actively creating a positive atmosphere for students and staff.
Everyday is a new opportunity to wake up and ask yourself, How am I going to be kind today? How am I going to include others? How can I show others I accept them for who they are?
Self-care should be a regular part of your daily routine An act of self -care doesn't need to be long or elaborate. Strengthening your emotional, physical, and spiritual health through self-care is the foundation for your overall health and well-being.
Often when you hear the word self-care you may think it means pampering yourself or treating yourself to a special activity. However, self care is actually the practice of taking an active role in protecting one's own well-being and happiness.
Self-care can look different for everyone.
For some it may include ensuring basic needs are met, like getting enough sleep. For others it may mean setting time aside for journaling or getting outside to enjoy some fresh air.
Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year! We are looking forward to a great year ahead!
