May is Mental Health Awareness month. Did you know that the term "Mental Health" is not just the absence of mental illness but also encompasses social, emotional, and behavior health as well as the ability to cope with life's challenges.
You need to be aware of and take care of your mental health just as you are aware of your physical health and take care of yourself when you are not feeling well, physically. There are practical tools that you can use to improve your mental health and increase resiliency.
As we approach testing season, we want to wish all of our students the best of luck on their Ohio State Tests. Now is the time to show what you know!
Mindfulness is an intentional practice. Like any muscle it needs practice and conditioning to develop and become part of your daily habits. When you engage in mindful practices you begin to approach things in your everyday life differently. In fact, you begin to feel less stressed and more confident in your abilities. An added bonus is that mindful practice supports the development of character traits that positively impact the way you feel about yourself and strengthens the relationships & friendships you have with others.
Random Acts of Kindness Day® is Wednesday February 17, 2021
Random Acts of Kindness Week is February 14-20, 2021
At Randomactsofkindness.org, they are upholding this annual tradition of celebrating kindness because they know everyone can use more kindness in their lives. Scientific evidence shows us the positive effects of doing kind acts for others as well as receiving or even witnessing kindness. Even the smallest act of kindness can change a life. In 2021, we encourage everyone to Explore the Good and Make Kindness the Norm.

Practicing mindfulness techniques is a great way to get to a calmer state, where our bodies are ready to focus. When you are feeling overwhelmed or unfocused try to take a moment for yourself, close your eyes and focus on your breath. It's one of the best things you can do for yourself to calm your thoughts and it will leave you feeling refreshed. Sometimes it takes only 60 seconds!
Choose music that helps you relax
Get into a comfortable position
Stay focused on the music- if you find yourself thinking about other things during this minute, gently redirect your thoughts back to the music.
Pick one of the audio clips on the left and give it a try!
verywellmind.comOne of the best ways to prepare for success is to look back on previous experience. 2020 is a year we will not likely forget. As we enter into 2021, putting intentions or goals in writing is a great way to accomplish them. You will also be building important skills:
Self-reflection: “How do I want to improve this year?”
Self-advocacy: “What do I need to do to help me reach my goal?”
Self-awareness: “Am I making progress toward my goal?”
Problem-solving and self-control: “What can I do to get back on track?”
Self-esteem: “How does achieving my goal make me feel?”
As we enter into holiday break be sure to pause and enjoy the little moments. Surely this break may look different than previous years, but try to slow down, relax and find new ways to safely connect with friends and loved ones.

Belly breathing is a simple way to quickly manage your stress levels. This proven method of stress reduction is easy to implement in almost any scenario. It works by activating your body’s natural relaxation response, which helps relieve muscle tension all over your body.
An added benefit is that by focusing your thoughts on the sensations of breathing, or even counting your breaths, you also help settle your mind. The next time you feel your heart race or your stress start to spike, do some belly breathing and feel the needle return to normal.
Mondaycampaigns.orgDuring these times when things are constantly changing, it is essential to care for our overall well being. One way to do this is to spend our time and energy focusing on how and what we are grateful for. We are asking a lot of ourselves these days and it is essential to make the investment in doing all we can to develop our inner strength so we can continue to be equipped to take on the challenges that come our way.
Make an effort to take some time over Thanksgiving break to pause, notice and reflect on what you are grateful for and free yourself, if even for a few moments, from focusing on all the things that might be weighing you down!
Have a Happy and Safe Thanksgiving!
