Welcome! This Web-Based Learning Tool (WBLT) supports students enrolled in Studio II: Commercial, a level-two course in the Ontario College Photography diploma program at Algonquin College in Ottawa, ON. The modules aim to teach the techniques required to light glass within the Studio II: Commercial course.
Please watch the video below for an overview, and then navigate the website to learn more.
This website was created during the 2023 Winter semester as an assignment for the EDUC 5104G Analysis & Design of Web-Based Learning Tools course, a contributing elective towards completing a Master of Education in the Faculty of Education at Ontario Tech University. Long term, the instructional modules will be hosted on the Algonquin College Brightspace.
In addition to the instructional modules, additional sections outline the planning stages, supportive learning theory, instructional design frameworks and rationale, digital tools, and works cited fulfill the course requirements.
As creating the modules required using many digital media assets, an additional section provides credit and sourcing information on these resources.
Hidden from view is a sandbox that contributed to the iteration phases of rapid prototyping as described in the ADDIE model (Seel et al., 2017).
In 2022, the Algonquin College Photography program underwent a program modification. The new program of study begins in the Fall of 2023. During the modification, the Photo Theory courses merged with the Studio courses, with one hour of online instruction added to the Studio course to accommodate the Theory course content. The new blended learning model will be one hour of online and three hours of in-person instruction.
The Studio course initially used a flipped learning model during the pandemic in response to room capacity limitations. Beginning in Fall 2023, flipped learning will facilitate the content from the old Theory course, preparing students to actively work and collaborate during in-person class time rather than passively watch demos or listen to lectures.
This WBLT has provided an opportunity to test design strategies for the new course format.
The three modules combine existing Theory II and Studio II: Commercial content to prepare for delivery in the Winter of 2024. A detailed breakdown of the learning objectives and goals are found under Modules.
This timelapse video was created during an in-person Studio II: Commercial class in February 2021, which utilized the format proposed by this WBLT.
Tracy Byers Reid is a Full Professor and Coordinator in the Photography Program at Algonquin College, where she has taught for over ten years. Before becoming an educator, Tracy spent eleven years as a commercial photographer working with various clients, specializing in product, room set, and off-figure fashion photography. She holds a Bachelor of Applied Arts in Image Arts from Toronto Metropolitan University and an Ontario College Diploma in Creative Photography from Humber College. She is pursuing a Master of Education at Ontario Tech University.
Like many educators, the pandemic challenged Tracy to create online course content to replace in-person instruction. This circumstance encouraged her to return to her multimedia background and rediscover her love for video production, which she now uses to create web-based learning tools for her students.Â
