Instructional design is, by nature, an iterative process. This page will outline the planning strategies used in developing this WBLT.
This course-recommended planning table outlines the key elements to consider when creating a WBLT.
Updated mind map
Created: March 8, 2023.
The initial plan was too elaborate. Based on Mayer's Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning, a more streamlined approach was developed (Mayer & Fiorella, 2014).Â
Initially, each module represented one hour of content to support 3 hours of in-class coursework. It also contained a section on studio and camera equipment which was extraneous.
The updated plan attempts to reduce the cognitive load by focusing on three lessons that scaffold to one assessment.
The Algonquin College Photography program uses branding and colour as a cueing strategy (Clarke & Mayer, 2011; Richardson et al., 2014) for students to stay organized in the Learning Management System (LMS).
In 2011, Jason Machinski, a faculty member in the Algonquin College Photography program, was teaching a multimedia course on branding and decided to utilize the program's courses as an example of how to apply branding to a large project. This project developed a program style guide for all program courses, including font usage and colour scheme. Each core vocational course theme is assigned a colour that darkens with each progressive level in the program. The visual unity between all courses adds continuity between communication design in the physical and virtual learning environments and eliminates confusion in accessing online course resources.
The modules on this website are part of the Studio series of courses in the Algonquin College Photography program. The branding colour for all Studio courses is purple, a colour associated with creativity (Sherin, 2012).
For visual continuity, the same purple (hex: #8b6b99) and a font similar to the branding standard were used to create this WBLT.
