Description:
Google Forms are an online survey and form creation tool provided by Google. It allows users to design customized forms and surveys with various question types and are highly customizable, allowing one to personalize themes, add images, and structure questions in a logical flow (Guay, 2022). Forms also has a feature for providing automated feedback to those completing them. This is done by utilizing the "Responses" tab which lets the creator input correct answers or give custom response feedback based on answers (Guay, 2022). Responses collected through Google Forms are automatically organized in Google Sheets, allowing for seamless data management and analysis (González et al., 2020), in addition to enabling real-time tracking of responses and facilitating collaboration among users. Forms can be shared easily with collaborators or distributed to respondents through email, social media, or embedded links.
Implementation in the classroom:
Google Forms are a great pre-assessment student tool that can be used to understand the level of knowledge present at the beginning of a new unit (Nguyen et al., 2018). Teachers can create quizzes on Google Forms that include multiple-choice, short-answer, and image-based questions. In terms of distribution, all teachers need to do is share the quiz link with the students via email or a learning management system (LMS) like Google Classroom (Nguyen et al., 2018). Once finished, teachers can review the responses and analyze the data given to identify areas where students may need additional support, giving them ideas on what they need to focus on during the unit.
How the tool enhances student learning:
The nature of Google Forms and their ability to collect data in an automated way, allows it to be a tool that enhances student learning through data-driven instruction (Nguyen et al., 2018). The data collected through Google Forms provides valuable insights into student performance and understanding (González et al., 2020), allowing educators to use this data to tailor instruction, identify trends, and address specific learning needs (Rath, 2023). Additionally, the instantaneous nature of feedback that this tool offers supports the learning process by helping students identify areas of strength and weakness (Rath, 2023) right away, so they can improve on further assessments. Finally, the accessibility of Google Forms across devices enhances learning and ensures that students can engage with the material anytime, anywhere (Guay, 2022).
