The IBCP@Island School offers students two pathways for those who want to focus their education on preparing for a vocational career or through a specialist pathway.
The 2 routes for IBCP are:
Route 1 ‘The Specialist IBCP’- Students will take one DP HL subject from Art, Music, Sport, Theatre, or Computer Science, along with 2 BTEC courses and another DP course SL.
Route 2 - ‘The Vocational Career Related Core IBCP’ - Students will take all 3 BTEC subjects offered (Business, Creative Media and Hospitality) along with 2 DP courses at SL.
All students have two periods per week dedicated to the Personal and Professional Skills course looking at Personal Development, Intercultural Understanding issues, Thinking Processes and Communication skills. As IB students they will also be carrying out Service Learning and studying a self initiated Language course. Finally they will also be researching and producing an academic piece of extended writing as a Reflective Project. Click on the links below to see course descriptions.
What makes up the IBCP?
2 IB subjects
2 or 3 Careers related subjects (BTECs)
Self initiated foreign language development
Reflective Project
Service learning
Personal and professional skills course
You can choose 2 IB Diploma Subjects That directly or indirectly compliment your choice of career BTEC courses. You need to achieve a level 3 or above to pass the IBCP, but if you take a HL then a 5 is seen as the university entrance goal.
BTECs are coursework only, No exams! Our students regularly get Distinction Stars, and they are highly valued in Universities in the UK and elsewhere.
You will study a foreign language of your choice for 50 hours over the 2 years. The language you learn is designed to be a practical addition to your chosen IBCP pathway. There is no final exam, but you will complete 5 assessments which you design yourself which will form an exhibition of languages at the end of Year 13.
You research an issue that really gets you mad! And formally write it up proving your academic abilities.
You do 50 hours of service that gives YOU the experience to write about to colleges and employers.
Extensive support with writing CV’s and personal statements, university research, and finding a weeks work experience.
Who is the IBCP for?
A. The Specialist
If you are wanting to follow passion for Art, Drama, Film and Media, Sport, Culinary Arts, Business and Hotel Management then you should choose the IBCP.
Double up your learning time in your favourite area by combining BTECs and IB Diploma Courses in the same subject.. (Build up your portfolio for university entrance, It is Skill and Experience not grades that will matter)
Gain more of the skills needed through Service Learning, Work experience, and Reflective Project
University entrance can be gained through BTECs, not the full IB DIploma.
B. The people person
In Business, Sports Management, Hospitality, Events and Marketing, Media Industries, it is your communication, people skills, willingness to work hard and experience that counts more than grades.
Can you work in teams, can you give great customer service, can you deliver on time?
The IBCP develops all this and logs them for you giving you the experience that universities are looking for in these courses.
How can students benefit from the CP?
The CP enables students to:
follow their chosen education and career pathways in life
combine academic subjects with their personal and professional interests and skills
engage in learning that makes a positive difference to their community
think critically and creatively

How do I pass the IBCP?

2 IB Diploma Subjects: achieve at least a level 3 in the exams and pass the coursework. You are in the lesson to benefit your career choices, not to get a 7? At HL you are aiming for a level 5.
Reflective project: 3000 words and at least a D. But enjoy investigating an ethical dilemma.
Language Development: 50 hours or on Duolingo get 5000 points! About an hour per term time week
Service learning: Log 50 hours volunteering doing things useful to your career.

BTECs are highly valued and recognised and come with UCAS Tariff points.
IBCP is growing fast around the world and is increasingly valued for the wide range of skills and focus it encourages.
