Sketchbook Lessons 1-12
Remember...you can earn an extra point for each of these if you write a paragraph explaining your decisions, your process, or your thoughts about your drawing!
Table of Contents for This Page
Sketchbook Cover (optional)
3/8/22: You MUST put your name on the cover at least, but you may also choose to decorate your cover with whatever materials you wish, for an extra 2 points.
Karla has metallic pens, if you wish to use them!
(Sketchbooks will be handed out to those who need art credits,
starting with seniors.)
Sketchbook #1: Line Patterns
3/8/22
Render a sketch, any subject, that just uses black and white patterns.
You must use at least FOUR different patterns. For example, the drawing to the right uses 14 patterns PLUS a section of PLANNED negative space (the sun/moon).
You MUST include an area of chosen negative space.
Use only black ink or black sharpie.
Remember to label: Line Patterns 3/8/22
Here's an example.

Sketchbook #2: Patterns Sampler
3/8/22
See Videos for Sketchbook #1!!
Now that you've seen what can be drawn with different line patterns, even in just black and white, try to design MORE patterns in a SAMPLER.
Divide your page into at least SIX sections (but you can have more, or you can use two separate pages so that you have room for several more), and for each box draw a different pattern. You can name them, as the artist has done on the example, but you are not required to.
A pattern involves repetition of shapes and outlines.
You can use ink, colored pencils, gel pens, and you can make this sampler in color or just black and white.

Sketchbook #3: Poetry and Pattern
You will be mixing artistic design AND words (quotations or poetry) in this assignment!
You can earn from 2-8 points, depending on how much work you put into this.
Use your favorite quotation(s), favorite poems, your own writing--as long as you attribute the writer in your art!
Decide what kind of pattern the words are going to be formed as--can be representational OR abstract.
You can use black & white or color.
You can use whatever art materials you wish. If you wish to make this larger (and then tuck into your notebook, like a fold-out page), that's GREAT! We can do that!
REMEMBER TO LABEL YOUR PAGE WITH ASSIGNMENT NAME!
My (quick) example, with a verse from my favorite poet. Walt Whiman's "Song of Myself."
Sketchbook #4: Moody Color
Certain colors inspire certain emotions; learn to use them!
This assignment is in two parts:
Read an article called "Color Psychology: Does it Affect How You Feel" and answer 5 question on the attached Google Form
Render a drawing in your sketchbook that chooses a single color family (but different shades and variations of the color) and label it with the MOOD you’re going for. The object(s) you draw can be anything, representational (looks like something) or totally abstract (just lines and shapes and patterns). Your label needs to say “Sketchbook #4: Moody Color” AND ALSO NAME THE MOOD (unless you made the word part of your sketch).
You get two points for reading the article and answering the questions (no more than one question wrong), and up to two points for the drawing.
You may use colored pencils, markers, pastels, anything you want for your drawing.
Black – authority, discipline, strength and promoting independence.
Blue – cool, calming, relaxing, and promotes feelings of tranquility and peace.
Green – balance, refreshing, normalizing, and promotes emotional growth.
Orange – cheerful, commanding, and stimulates goodwill, conversation and appetites.
Pink – calming, accepting, and encourages affection and socialization.
Purple – comforting, spiritual, and generates mystery and a good sense of intuition.
Red – empowerment, stimulation, drama, competition and passion.
White – purification, energy, unity, and gives vigor to other colors it is used in combination with.
Yellow – cheerful, expanding, and increases energy.

Sketchbook #5: It's a Big World!
What if you were the size of an ant, draw the view you would see if you were in a forest or in a city or in a house looking at ground level looking up. You can have it look cartoon-like or realistic, add fantasy creatures (keep them appropriate!), however you wish.
You can use colored pencils,
black & white drawing pencils, markers.
Remember to label your page.
Show me when you're finished to collect your points!
Sketchbook #6: The Hand Has It...
April 4, 2022
On a page in your sketchbook, TRACE your hand (or part of it, most likely). Your hand can be in any school-appropriate position. When you're done tracing around the outside, look at your drawing: what does it remind you of? What could you turn that into? Landscape? Alien? Flowers? Furniture? Anime? Fantasy art? Science fiction art? Animals? People?
Choose something and then complete the drawing of what you've chosen, using that hand outline as the basis.
Materials: Sketch pencils, colored pencils, markers--any or all.
REMEMBER TO LABEL YOUR PAGE WITH THE ASSIGNMENT TITLE!
REMEMBER TO SHOW ME YOUR SKETCHES WHEN YOU'RE DONE SO I CAN ASSIGN POINTS!
