What Is a Tax Extension?
Filing an extension means we are requesting more time from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to file your tax return. An extension moves the filing deadline from April 15 to October 15.
Important: An extension is an extension to file, not an extension to pay.
How This Affects You
If you usually get a refund:
There is no penalty for filing an extension. You will simply receive your refund later when your return is completed.
If you usually owe taxes:
You should make an estimated payment with your extension to avoid interest and possible penalties (we can arrange this or you can do so yourself at www.IRS.gov. You can estimate based on what you owed last year, plus 10%. If you overpay, you will get the rest back as a refund when you file.
Interest accrues on unpaid balances after April 15 at approximately 1% per month.
**If you do NOT want to sit down in person for an appointment, feel free to check out our Drop Off or Secure Client Portal option
