We believe that climate change is one of the biggest threats we are facing today. It has the power to impact our lives more than we could imagine right now and probably will, if we don’t do anything about it. While C02 output caused by cars is much talked about, since the exhaust scandal in the car industry emerged, other sources of C02 emissions have taken a backseat in public discussion. We want to call attention to another producer of those, our food logistics. Products usually travel a huge number of miles from other countries or even other continents to reach us. This fact greatly contributes to global warming. Meanwhile there is nothing people can really do about it, except switching to regional products produced nearby. Since those are way more expensive, they are not an viable option for a lot of people with below average salary. Our application EcologicalFoodprint offers a simple solution: Supermarkets join our program on their own behalf and make sure a QR code with information about the CO2 consumption of the specific product gets attached to it. We then provide an app which allows to scan this QR code and check the emissions of this product. It also allows to set a weekly or monthly goal regarding the CO2 output caused by buying food. This way we hope to call people’s attention to the problem and make them aware of their ecological foodprint. The average consumer can then effectively lower it and reduce his or her own C02 emissions. Overall goal is a little step towards preventing climate change and save our future!
