Before the meeting in Sint-Niklaas, the Belgian students thought about a way to make the integration easier for people migrating to Belgium, and who don't speak the language. If you don't know the language and you're new in a city, it's sometimes hard to find your way in the everyday's life.
We created a point-it guide, a small guide with pictures of things, necessary to 'survive': food, clothes, buildings, services, ... People who don't speak Dutch, or another common language still can ask for help by using the point-it guide. They just have to point at the thing they need and people on the street, in the supermarket, ... can help them.
We made an Actionbound city game / scavenger hunt in the city of Sint-Niklaas, in which the participants had to use the point-it guide to complete some missions. We chose to invite the OKAN-class to join us playing the Actionbound game. OKAN-students (OKAN = Education for newcomers from foreign countries) are students who just arrived in Belgium and who are starting to learn Dutch. They all have a different background and mother tongue. We divided the groups in visiting Erasmus students and teachers, OKAN-students and some of the Belgian students. We tried to mix the nationalities as much as possible, so they really had to use the Point-it Guide.
During the Actionbound game, the team had to work together and got in contact with some common words in Dutch, Belgian specialties and important buildings in Sint-Niklaas.
Here you can find the point-it guide, created by a team of Belgian students:
