Previous Initiatives 23/24:
In previous years, our Debate Club sessions were supported by external trainers who came into school to guide and mentor students in debating. These sessions helped students build confidence in public speaking, learn structured argument techniques, and practice debating on real-world issues. Now, we continue the spirit of Debate Club through our in-school enrichment club, where students develop their critical thinking and communication skills with their peers.
The first round of Debate Mate took place at Oasis Academy Lees Brook, where 12 students showcased their amazing talents and actively participated in debating. Pupils were engaged and demonstrated their confidence. They worked collectively to prepare for their debates against other schools. This led to the enhancement of their oracy and critical thinking skills.
The second round of Debate Mate occurred at Eden Boys Leadership Academy, where thirteen pupils engaged in debating and timekeeping. Divided into two teams, they prepared to debate against other schools. Students actively participated and enjoyed the debates. The motion presented was 'This house would ban the use of mobile phones in schools,' prompting pupils to articulate their arguments. The team achieved one victory, which brought success to the team.
