Our hope is for all students to feel comfortable and safe, regardless of their health status, when attending school field trips. In order for students to participate fully in the field trip activities, medications may need to be administered during the field trip.
Typically the school nurse does not attend field trips and a teacher or designated chaperone will be in charge of administering your students medication (s). Careful consideration will be given to the students' confidentiality and the 6 “R’s” will be applied: Right student, Right medication, Right time, Right dosage, Right route and Right documentation. All designated teachers or adults will be appropriately trained by the school nurse on safe medication administration.
The administration of medication to students on overnight field trips shall be done only when the student has a medical condition that may be adversely affected without medication.
If your child has any scheduled prescription medications at school, the prescribed dose, time and route will be sent with your child on the field trip.
All emergency medications stored in the health office will be sent with the student on the field trip and be kept with the student chaperone or teacher.
Day Field Trips
If you would like to send medication with your child on the field trip that is not being kept in the health office already, please complete the following:

Medication must be sent into the health office the day before the field trip in the original container or prescription bottle with the student name and date of birth.
Overnight Field Trips
For 6th grade -8th grade parents only
An overnight field trip permission form with further medical information will be provided closer to your child’s specific field trip.
Medication must be sent into the health office 2 days before the field trip in the original container or prescription bottle with the student name and date of birth.
**Reminder: For safety purposes: Please only send medications when a student has a medical condition that may be adversely affected without medication.
All illnesses that occur during a field trip will follow the OLG illness policy that if a student is experiencing a fever, vomiting, diarrhea etc, parents will be notified immediately and will be required to pick up the student at their location.
If a severe injury (ie: broken bone, head injury) occurs during a field trip, parents will be notified immediately. Depending on the severity of the injury, 911 may need to be called and with parent permission, students would be taken to the nearest medical facility.
In the event of a medical emergency, 911 will be called and students will be taken to the nearest hospital for further treatment. On field trip permission forms, please see consent for emergency medical treatment.
