Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a CDIB and a Tribal Enrollment Card ?

NASS would like to encourage our parents to know the difference between a Certificate Degree of Indian (CDIB) and Tribal Membership.  CDIB cards are issued by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. It typically looks like a small, white business card. It lists an individual’s blood degree by tribe with birth date and SS#. Having a CDIB does NOT mean you are an enrolled member of a federally recognized Tribe.

Tribal Membership cards can look like a driver's license or a document on Tribal Letterhead with a Tribal Seal.  Every Tribe is different on what they issue their Tribal Members for proof of enrollment.

We encourage all of our families to make sure that your child has BOTH a CDIB and Tribal Membership.

Do you need to be enrolled in a Tribe to qualify for Native American Services?

No, a student does not need to be enrolled in a tribe to receive services from Native American Student Services.  All that is required is the completion of the Title VI 506 form.

However, if the child is not enrolled in a tribe, a parent or grandparent SHOULD be enrolled with a tribe.  Please indicate who is enrolled – student, parent or grandparent – on the Title VI 506 form.

How do I recieve services from Native American Student Services?

Any student who wishes to recieve services from Native American Student Services must complete an Indian Education 506 Form.  See the form above.

How do I become a member of a Tribe?

Every tribe has a different process for Tribal Membership. The best place to find out how your child can be enrolled in a Tribe is to look on the Tribal website. Most Tribes call this department “Enrollment”, “Citizenship” or "Membership". The Tribal Enrollment process can take a long time, sometimes up to a year or more so we encourage families to begin the Tribal Enrollment process early.
