Welcome to Native American Student Services

The Native American Student Services department works to promote and support the academic success and cultural heritage of Native American students in the district. This includes providing resources and support to students and families, collaborating with tribal communities, and incorporating Native American culture and history into the curriculum.  NASS advocates for and provides services to Native American students and families who attend OKC public schools and their charter schools.  NASS strives to provide support to meet the unique needs of Native American students in an urban setting.

Our 3 areas of focus are:

Native American Student Services is funded by two federal grants.  The first grant is the Title VI (Title VI) Indian Education Grant from the Office of Indian Education out of the US Department of Education.  The second grant is the Johnson O’Malley (JOM) grant out of the Bureau of Indian Education from the US Department of Interior.

Culture
Our focus is to provide students and families with opportunities to learn about the diversity of  Native American culture. Our hope is that our students will participate in our variety of events, programs, and classes to gain cultural awareness. Our department offers two large community events, our annual powwow and annual stompdance. Additionally, we have programs for students that are interested in becoming student ambassadors for our department such as the Resonative Youth Dance Troupe and Miss Native American OKCPS. We are a family oriented department and provide events and activities for the whole family in our cultural nights and cultural classes.

College and Career
Our focus is on helping students with navigating college and careers by providing scholarship workshops, college application assistance, resume building, a confidence boost, campus tours, exposure to career possibilities and preparing for life after high school. We want to make sure that when you graduate, you are ready for life. We also offer help with test taking tips, meetings with Native American faculty and staff at local colleges and universities.

Student/Family Resources
Our purpose is to provide support and resources to students who are experiencing extreme hardship or who are in crisis.  NASS aims to provide immediate support to students experiencing trauma.  We work closely with school staff to develop strategies and interventions that support students' social and emotional needs.   NASS connects families to Tribal resources, mental health agencies, community resources, and social services networks.  Our focus is to get the student into a stable environment and remove barriers so that learning can take place and the student can have a positive educational experience.
