Research with our Beloved Afghan Refugee Community in OKC
A new study with the Afghan refugee community we have been so fortunate to welcome to Oklahoma. Let us continue to embrace all the ways they have enhanced our lives, and their needs, strengths, aspirations, and ongoing journeys here in the U.S.
"The resettlement of Afghan refugees in Oklahoma City, OK, provides a critical context for examining the mental health challenges faced by this population due to post-migration stressors.
This study utilized online surveys to recently resettled Afghan refugees in Oklahoma City, with support provided by bilingual research assistants... The findings highlight the profound impact of post-migration stressors on the mental health of Afghan refugees. This study underscores the need for targeted interventions to address the specific challenges faced by refugees, such as language barriers, employment, legal support, and anti-discrimination measures, to facilitate better integration and improve mental health outcomes."

Multilingual Trauma Resource for Caregivers - A Picture Book for Parents & Guardians
This is an important project "created for parents of refugee children and to support professional individuals. It is adapted from Peter Levine and Maggie Klein's book Protecting Your Children from Trauma. The goal was to provide simple but professional information about what trauma is and how parents can help their children, often without additional help from professionals who may be in short supply..." This was created with top trauma experts and others who shared insight from their own lived experiences.
This healing picture book is currently available in Arabic, English, Ukrainian, Slovak, Spanish, German, Turkish, Japanese, Czech, Greek, Dutch, Polish, Italian, and Bulgarian. Many more languages are forthcoming.

"Dear parents and caregivers,
We understand that it is almost impossible for someone from the outside to imagine the horrors of war or the hardship of living as a refugee.
Through this little picture book, we would like to make your life a little bit easier by giving you some information about trauma and what you can do to help your children, with or without professional help, which may be lacking.
On the following pages, you can find concepts, skills and activities that were designed for the parents of traumatized children to help release the energy of the overwhelming traumatic events.
You are probably naturally doing some of what is written here. Therefore, please, feel free to find more inspiration and choose whatever suits you or your child or adapt it to their specific needs."
