Integers and Opposites

Whole Numbers: Any counting number including zero, and can not be a fraction or a decimal. Must always be a positive number.


Integers: Any whole number and its opposite. Can not be a fraction or a decimal. (Any positive or negative number)


Opposites: A number the same distance from zero but on opposite sides of zero. It is a positive and a negative number.

Absolute Value

Absolute Value: The number's distance from zero. Usually always a positive number.

Use vertical lines to represent absolute value.

Examples:

| 7 | = 7

| -7 | = 7

- | 7 | = -7

- | -7 | = - 7

Rational Numbers: Any number that can be written as a fraction or decimal, including repeating and terminating numbers.
