Developing the Pitch
Congratulations, you are nearly at the end of your co-op experience. You have now successfully completed the design thinking process to address your chosen topic within your chosen Lens. You have worked hard to build personal transferable skills, gain an informed understanding of your topic, connected with relevant professionals, and developed and tested a product. Now it is your time to put it all together and tell everyone about all the amazing things you have accomplished.
To do so you are asked to create a ‘Pitch Presentation’ to ‘Sell’ people on your idea as it stands today. The best way to think about this is if you wanted to continue this project or initiative, you would need support to do so. Your pitch is a chance for you to gain interest, investment, and passion for your solution.
Maybe you didn't get as far as you wanted or things did not go exactly to plan, don't be discouraged as you have learned and benefited for the overall co-op experience. You are still pitching with confidence, insight, and reflection on next steps.
Your pitch presentation session should be a professional presentation that you plan, develop, and run. It is natural to feel nervous but You Are Ready and bring all the experience and success from your check point meetings!
You should discuss with your co-op teacher who you would like to invite to this presentation. Think of people who could benefit to learn about your project and/or people who could take it over or continue its development. You may want to include any professionals you connected with during interviews or feedback points. A great pitch would have 4 - 6 people in attendance.
You will develop a formal email to invite your guests and tell them what they are being asked to do. You can explain that this is a presentation to share your project and that you are looking for some insight from industry professionals. Provide some dates/times and decide on your platform (e.g. in person, google meet, etc.)
You can choose to do this presentation on any platform (Google Slides, Canva, Google Sites, etc.). Presentation should be visually appealing including relevant graphics, color, achievements, and images from your experiences. Start with a template that includes slides or sections that cover the following:
What is this all about? Be clear and concise to set the tone.
What was the need that you identified from your research and discussions with your mentor? (This is your Lens and topic)
Find a way to share your topic/approach in a brief and concise statement
Elaborate on your idea. Share your strategy. Share your research.
Specifically share what you found from your research and interviews - Not everything, but a summary.
Explain your proposed idea or solution and why it is great. Share the impact that it has/will continue to have.
Share what you have created and how it has shifted or evolved throughout this time.
Discuss the feedback you received throughout the process and how/if and why it was implemented to improve your 'action'.
Discuss challenges and how you have addressed them.
Identify next steps beyond the end of this co-op for your solution.
Close out by reflecting on the transferable and technical skills you have developed throughout this course and your chosen model.
Summarize key takeaways and conclude by controlling the take away at the end. Make it clean, concise, strong and positive!
Be clear, be creative, and take pride in the hard work you have done!
