The Parts of this Module Include
Understanding or Defining the Design Thinking Process
Exploring and Choosing a Lens
Regardless of the Lens you have chosen for this co-op experience, each one should be based and follow the principals of Design Thinking. Design thinking is a method of approaching a situation, problem, topic, issue, challenges, etc. that encourages you to see that ‘thing’ from different perspectives. The goal would be to then develop solutions or approaches to address your starting point. The design thinking framework developed by using approaches taken from designers from all industries and generalized into a commonly used work model. When it comes down to it, design thinking has some key elements including:
Clarifying, Research, or Empathize: Develop an understanding of your ‘users’ needs and current situation of your chosen topic
Define: Find ways to articulate these needs to define your focus
Ideate: Create ideas, possible solutions, or approaches to your topic based on your newly developed understanding.
Develop or Prototype: Decide on a solution or approach and put it into play (build it, implement it, etc.)
Implement or Test: implement and assess the success or outcome of the solution you developed to address your users needs
Depending on your chosen lens for this co-op experience, you will find yourself within the various stages of the design thinking process for different amounts of time. For example, if you have chosen to take on a school improvement initiative that is already kind of in the works in some capacity, you may spend less time empathizing and defining the topic and more time developing and implementing solutions. Whereas, if you chose a challenge focused lens you may need to spend more time researching and gaining understanding of your end user and the topic itself before you can begin to ideate.

Module 2: Activity 1
Now that you understand the Design Thinking Framework you have to decide a Lens for your co-op. From this point, the work you will be doing will be targeted towards the Lens you choose. Each Lens will approach the design thinking model differently and it is important to make a decision now so you are not wasting time later. You properly have an idea of the direction you want to take from what was described at the start of the website.
Activity
Make a decision on the Lens you want to take for this Project. Use your own and the prompt questions to help you define your direction.
You will be asked to do an activity in your Workbook about this below.
Lens 1
Entrepreneurship
Do you have a business idea you want to flush out?
Do you have unique and innovative ideas you want to implement?
Can you define your industry of focus?
Are you developing a product or service to market?
Who is your target audience?
What is a manageable scale for now and then the future?
Lens 2
School Improvement Initiative
Do you have a school improvement initiative you want to explore?
Do you know any teachers who are working on new or exciting things for your school you want to be part of?
Do you have an idea for a physical space or program that you think should be in your school?
What do we know about the project?
What do we need to know?
Who are they ‘key players’?
What is the desired outcome?
Lens 3
Challenge Focus
What is an industry of interest?
Is the scale of your issue big or small?
Who is impacted by your topic?
What is currently out there to address this topic?
Need some ideas?
