Important Note for Upgrading Students
For students who are upgrading in College or University pathways:
Many students come to St. Nicholas looking for a specific goal in math courses: a mark of 50%, 65%, 75%, 80%, 90%. These are common targets for our students.
With our short-duration, intensive courses, a strong understanding of foundational skills is even more important than in regularly structured high school courses. We want our students to be successful, but part of this success comes from understanding readiness to be at a particular level.
If you are coming into the course with strong foundational skills, you should expect to spend a minimum of 20-25 hours per week on this course to be successful. If any of the following apply, you should expect a minimum additional 3-5 hours per week:
It has been over 2 years since your last math course
You had an average of less than 70% in the prerequisite course
You are looking to raise your mark in this course compared to the prerequisite course
If your foundational skills are not well-developed, it is highly recommended that you retake the prerequisite course. This will give you a better skill set to work from and will usually result in better overall results.
Consider the following example:
Figure1: Student with a Grade 11 mark of 65% goes straight into a Grade 12 course
Figure B: Student with a 65% in Grade 11 course retakes Grade 11 course before doing Grade 12 course
Please review the outlines and sample exams below and consult with your guidance counsellor if you need help deciding which level of course would be in your best interest.

Materials Required
computer with internet access
scanner or smartphone - Except for 3E and 4E students, all assignments will be handwritten and then scanned (using a scanner or smartphone) into a single .pdf file to be uploaded. 3E and 4E students have the option to print and scan or complete the assignment workbooks online. See the Training Centre section on Scanning using a Smartphone for more information.
scientific calculator - NOT a graphing calculator and NOT a phone. Students should be familiar with the features of their calculator prior to exams.
ruler/straightedge - To be used for drawing axes, lines, diagrams, etc. Presentation marks will be deducted for poorly drawn lines.
