SPOTLIGHT ON A MONTH IN HISTORY: FEBRUARY
By: Aiden E.
February 9th, 1943
After months on the tiny island of Guadalcanal, where they landed on the beach in tiny British-made boats, called Higgins boats, U.S. soldiers finally captured the island from the rule of the Japanese. With the end of the battle, they were able to move on to the next island on their list to capture.

The Britannic
by Connor J.
Most people know this ship's sister ship, The Titanic, because it is mostly famous for that big crash, and a lot of casualties. Not as many people know about one of its sister ships: The Britannic.
The Britannic’s construction began November 30th, 1911, which is 111 years ago. Kind of crazy how this big ship’s construction began that long ago. It took almost three years to build, and it finally launched November 21,, 1914, which is a couple months after WWI started (July 28, 1914) The grand ship’s length was 883 feet, which is bigger than both of the sister ships (Titanic, which was not much shorter than the Britannic 882.75 ft, and Olympic, 882 ft). But, despite the ship's size, it sank 3 times faster than the sister ships. But, luckily the Britannic sank in much warmer water- The Aegean Sea, which is in between southern Greece, and central Turkey.
Medical Needs
Not surprisingly, a lot of people don’t know what this grand ship was used for, but if you don’t, now you will! The Britannic was a medical carrier ship. It was used to carry the hurt in World War I. After the ship sank, 30 deaths were reported, and it sank 400 feet, which is a lot less than the Titanic- which sank 12,000 feet. Are you wondering how far the Olympic sank? Well, The Olympic was actually sold for scrap in 1938, which is 22 years after the Britannic sank, and 26 years after the Titanic sank. The Britannic wasn’t only used for caring for the hurt— but this is why we have Google. You can look up a lot about this ship, that might not be in this article!
The Bang of 1916
This ship definitely had a really bad fate. So you know how I said this took place in 1916– and in the middle of World War I? Well, there is a problem…
BANG!
The Britannic got hit with a German missile. Instead of getting hit by an iceberg (Titanic) or getting sold for scrap (Olympic), it got hit with a German missile. At the bottom, too, so it sank a lot faster. Thirty people died that day, which is 1474 less people than the Titanic.
It must’ve been a loud bang, and imagine how scared people were.
Concluding
Thank you for reading this article, I hope you enjoyed it, and were intrigued by the information. Now you know about the infamous Titanic’s sister ship.
