About 120 years ago, a group of Finnish migrants decided to create a better life. Their dream became Sointula, a settlement on a B.C. island.

From conservation to climate change and activism, these Young Citizens share stories about the history of Canada’s environment.
When the COVID-19 pandemic swept Canada last spring, students were forced to deal with sudden closures and cancellations as everything from classes and concerts to school trips and sporting events were shut down.
For thousands of students, this also meant missing out on their annual heritage fairs — public exhibitions of student research projects about Canadian history.
Despite the disruption, many students continued their research at home and created short videos on an aspect of Canadian history for the Young Citizens program.
Canada's History is proud to share the work of this new cohort of young Canadian filmmakers. You are encouraged to view the videos, leave a comment or story, and support the next generation of storytellers.
As more and more people are staying home to help contain the spread of COVID-19, the museum is here to support and engage Canadians with some of their resources during these challenging times.

Brittany Luby and her ancestors are from the Lake of the Woods area, most of which is now within northwestern Ontario. In her multiple-award-winning book Dammed: The Politics of Loss and Survival in Anishinaabe Territory, she writes that the Anishinabeg have “since time immemorial” lived and fished along the waterways of the Winnipeg River drainage basin that includes the lake and that extends into parts of Manitoba and Minnesota.
