“The Kindergarten program is a child-centered, developmentally appropriate integrated program of learning for four- and five-year-old children” (The Kindergarten Program, 2016, p. 8).
The purpose of the two-year program is to:
Create a play-based environment as a foundation for physical, social, emotional and cognitive development
Nurture a love for lifelong learning in all children
Support children’s individual differences in thinking and learning
At Chapman Mills Public School, we take a play-based approach to learning. Research shows us that there is a strong link between play and learning in young children. In kindergarten, many traditional subjects like math, social and personal development, art, language and science are woven into our daily schedule through play. Your children will be encouraged to explore their own environments and choose activities that both motivate them and reflect their developmental stages. This year your child will begin to learn about letters and sounds, and begin connecting oral language and writing. We will also be learning all about numbers, building on important math concepts including sorting, counting, graphing, classifying, patterns, time, measurement, and simple addition and subtraction skills.
As you may be aware, the OCDSB has determined that all children entering school in kindergarten will be entered in the bi-lingual program, and will be receiving their education in both English (50%) and French (50%). The children will receive their English instruction from Laura Green and their French instruction from Anne Payette. They will alternate between English and French instruction. The ECEs will stay with the students for each day, providing extra consistency for the children.
