Oberlin College partnered with the Corella and Bertram F. Bonner Foundation in fall 1992 to launch the Bonner Scholars Program (BSP) at Oberlin. Since that time, over 400 Oberlin students have completed the program and 60 are currently participating, developing leadership skills and contributing to the local community through service. The Oberlin College Bonner Scholars Program continues to bring together current scholars, alumni, community partners, members of the Bonner Foundation, and past program staff to reflect on and celebrate achievements, lessons learned, and future directions.
The Bonner Scholars Program is an anchor program of the Bonner Center for Community-Engaged Learning, Teaching, & Research. We are proud to be a part of the Center for Engaged Liberal Arts (CELA) located on the bottom floor of Mudd Center, beneath the Mary Church Terrell Library.
The founding mission for the Bonner Program is to provide diverse low-income, underrepresented, and first generation students with the opportunity to attend college, while engaging their talents and educations in building and supporting communities.
Created to provide underrepresented and first-generation students with “access to education and opportunity to serve,” the Bonner Scholars Program is a four-year community service scholarship program offered by Oberlin College in collaboration with the Corella and Bertram F. Bonner Foundation.
The program supports students who are committed to community service by helping them develop as leaders and change agents in the local community and beyond.
Oberlin hosted the Bonner Foundation Summer Leadership Institute in the Summer of 2024. Oberlin Bonner Scholars, Foundation Interns, and Foundation & College staff welcomed over 300 students, staff, faculty, and national partners from all over the country. With a theme of "Seeds & Sounds of Service", this year's conference centered on how the arts, sciences, and self expression can impact our service.
