Focus: Developing a support/social skills group for autistic girls to address the lack of support for this population.
As a part of the CAMS summer internships I got the opportunity to work alongside clinical psychologists to create a group for autistic girls. The group addresses the unique experience of being a girl on the spectrum and aims to provide a safe space in a society and disorder that is male-centric.
I was diagnosed with autism at age 19. If more was known about how autism presents in girls I would have gotten necessary interventions earlier. I am determined to offer young girls the understanding that I was missing. Creating the group taught me to love my autism and not see it as a hindrance.
