Q & A: Taking the Exam

Click on a question below to expand the response.

What's on the exam?

There is a detailed breakdown for each section of the graduate and undergraduate exam on the Exam Breakdown page here

When is the exam available?

The graduate and undergraduate placement exams are both available year-round and fully accessible online. Please see your advisor or program director for requirements or deadlines that may be specific to your program.

Exam results may take up to 2 weeks to post, so please make sure that you complete the exam 2 weeks before your results are needed.

When can I expect the results? Where will they be posted?

Results will be posted on the Exam Results page within 2 weeks of submitting the exam.  Results will not be posted unless the exam submission form has been submitted.

Did you forget to complete the submission form? If so, you may complete the form using the links below. The form is required to submit your exam; if this form is not received, your exam will not be graded.

How long does the exam take? Is it timed? Can I take breaks?

You'll find a complete breakdown of each section of the exam along with information about timing on the Exam Breakdown page of the website.

The exam is broken into several sections. These sections may be taken on different days/times, but once you begin a section you will need to complete it in one sitting. You will not be able to log back in to complete it if the window is closed.

Can I take the exam more than once?

No. You will only be able to take the placement exam once. We recommend that you attempt some practice questions in the software before you begin in order to familiarize yourself with the interface and the question types that you will see on the exam.

What if I have a problem during the exam?

If you have any questions or issues while you are taking the exam, please contact the Steinhardt Music Theory program at smusic.theory@nyu.edu. If it is a technical problem (e.g. issues with audio, input, navigation, etc.), please also lodge a support request with the tech team at Auralia here. Describe the problem with as much detail as possible. Include relevant information such as the device and browser you're using to to access the exam and, for international students, if you're using a VPN. The more info you provide, the quicker it will be to troubleshoot.

Login/Password Issue? You can recover both here instantly. Graduate Students: The school code is NYU-EXAM. Undergraduates: The school code is NYU-STEINHARDT.

I'm trying to log in. What is the "School Code"?

Graduate Students: The school code is NYU-EXAM

Undergraduates: The school code is NYU-STEINHARDT

What if I don't see my exam results?

Results will be posted on the Exam Results page within 2 weeks of submitting the exam.  Results will not be posted unless the exam submission form has been submitted.

Did you forget to complete the submission form? If so, you may complete the form using the links below. The form is required to submit your exam; if this form is not received, your exam will not be graded.

Are you a DMA applicant? If you didn't submit an application number with your exam, you will not be able to access your results. Your results will only be accessible to the admissions committee. You may reach out to the music theory program at smusic.theory@nyu to request your results. Please wait at least 2 weeks after the submission form has been submitted.

What if I forgot to fill out the submission form at the end of the exam?

If you missed the submission form at the end of your exam, there's a link to each form below. This form is required to submit your exam; if this form is not received, your exam will not be graded.
