Registration Help
Need help registering for a Music Theory or History Course?
Graduate Students:
For course information for remedial courses see here. For information on theory electives, see here.
Need department consent to register?
All remedial music theory and history courses require department consent. Your exam results and/or history results must be posted before registering. Your advisor can register you for one of these courses based on your placement results. The Music Theory & History program can also assist with registration: Fill out the Registration Consent form to request a permission code.
For all other courses that require department consent, please fill out the Registration Consent form.
For any other registration issues, email the Music Theory program at smusic.theory@nyu.edu.
Undergraduate Students:
Need help registering for a closed course?
We recommend that you add yourself to the waiting list for the course, but also register for one of the other open sections. You may set up a swap in Albert that will drop the course and swap you into your desired waitlisted class if a seat opens up. (See the video for swapping classes here and for editing a swap here.)
If you are unable to enroll in any open section or all sections of the class are full, please add yourself to one of the waiting lists. If no seats open up before classes begin, the music theory program will reach out to you to help you enroll in a section. Please be patient; we'll make sure that everyone on a waiting list is enrolled in a section before classes begin.
If you are unable to get onto a waiting list, email the music theory program (smusic.theory@nyu.edu) and include the following information in your email:
Your student ID number (8-digit number that begins with an "N")
A complete copy of your course schedule with times and course numbers
Please note that we cannot accommodate preferred times or instructors, only legitimate scheduling conflicts.
Need help because of a pre-requisite error?
See the list of required pre-requisites for courses here. Please ensure that you have the required requisites to register for the course.
Need department consent to register?
Music Majors: You shouldn't need consent to register if you've placed into the course you're registering for and you have the required requisites. If you are registering for Aural Skills 1, please be sure that you also have also registered for a section of Theory & Practice I. This course is a require co-requisite. If the course is full, you will need to register for an open section in order to register for Aural Skills 1.
Non-Majors: If you are registering for Music Fundamentals, please complete the Registration Consent form and we will send you a permission code for registration. All other music theory courses (with the exception of Music Theory for Non-Majors) require a placement exam prior to registration. There is more information here about the exam. Once you have completed the exam, please fill out the Registration Consent form and we will send you a permission code for registration.
For any other registration issues, please email the Music Theory program at smusic.theory@nyu.edu.
