The projects for Tandon Honors students in the Global Leaders & Scholars in STEM program consist of a culmination of various experiences, research, and interests related to the Tandon Areas of Research Excellence. Scholars are also required to address the NAE Grand Challenges and think about the United Nations Sustainability Development Goals when doing so. At the end of the 3 years in the GLASS Program, students have a better understanding of the impact they can have on changing the world for the better. GLASS students enter the world as globally competent and socially responsible innovators and engineers!
I am focused on the advancement of medical devices and medicines that can alleviate conditions despite pre-existing genetic conditions.
Currently, I am working on a flexible bio-compatible electrode that would stimulate the gut. This would indirectly act as an interface to stimulate the brain and thus ideally treat neurological disorders for a larger group of individuals.
In the future, I hope to publish a paper on the results of these experiments and branch out into similar labs and fields to further my knowledge and experience in the requirements of advancing the medical industry
Health
The primary focus of my mission statement is related to the Health Area of Excellence. The creation of newer medical technologies that can treat the same conditions differently from before would allow a larger group of people to be treated for that same illness. Having medicines that focus on regeneration would mean being able to treat patients who have suffered from loss of organs and consequently body functions.
Data Science/AI/Robotics
My mission statement would also involve a key element of data science. Since part of my goal is to help treat genetic malformations, a significant part of this is to find what the malformation is in itself. This would involve genetic screenings and locating errors in the patient's DNA code. This would require software and newer algorithms that would be able to read the incredibly long sequence of DNA and pinpoint a specific issue.
The primary UN Sustainability Development goal I wish to target is the promotion of the health and well-being of individuals of all ages, as my goal of alleviating genetic disorders would allow individuals from all walks of life to live a healthier life.
My mission also connects to the NAE Grand Challenge of engineering better medicines as it involves progressing the ability of the medical industry to personalize their medicines for different groups of people with varying disabilities to ensure that many more can have their illnesses treated
