"The kids can't read!"
If you've been on TikTok, read any articles on education, listened to teacher friends complain, or even been concerned about the state of your own child's level of education, this is probably a familiar worry to you--and for good reason. There's been a notable decline in literacy skills and reading scores in the past several years, especially among the young students whose foundational years were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Curriculum changes, disruptions to the learning environment, and a lack of resources both in school and at home have all fed into a growing crisis where students need more help than ever reaching the level they need to be reading at.
Whether you're an educator, parent, librarian, caretaker, or someone who just want the kids to be all right, we all know how crucial reading skills are for children's overall success both in school and out of it. The key to helping early elementary students recover their literacy skills is by building their confidence and improving their reading stamina. Our project aims to address this gap by creating a supportive and engaging learning environment that motivates students to read not just for class, but also for themselves. Through emphasizing reading strategies to support independent problem-solving, collaborative reading with partners, and a scaffolded learning approach that promotes autonomy and self-reflection, this project will support students in building their literacy skills while empowering them in their journey, setting the stage for long-term growth and success.
