The NAEP (National Assessment of Educational Progress) has reported a notable decline in reading scores in the past few years, after historically low scores in 2022. Due to COVID-19's disruption of the traditional learning environment, many young students have experienced significant setbacks in their literacy development that continue to impact them to this day.
Our analysis aims to discover the key areas that have been impacted and discover what can be done to help children recover their literacy skills.
Students will enjoy a fun and encouraging way to improve their reading skills and build their confidence.
Teachers will be able to offer targeted support to students and address the gaps in their literacy skills.
Parents and extracurricular programs will have resources to support children's literacy development outside of school.
The SAM model (Successive Approximation Model) is an instructional design model focusing on rapid iterative design. When we began, we planned to use the SAM method for our project, recognizing the need for iterating on feedback quickly. However, after our research, we came to realize that the ADDIE model, emphasizing learning designs with clear parameters of success, may be more suitable for our project, as we are designing a non-tech based learning solution focused on a concrete skill: literacy.
Analyze literacy needs of students that are lacking or have been negatively impacted, identifying gaps in key skills and knowledge.
Design a learning solution that addresses the gaps in skills, knowledge, motivation, or environment to support literacy skill development.
Develop a solution that encourages learners to build their reading stamina and confidence, drawing motivation from both existing support systems and autonomous means.
Implement design solution with learners, monitoring engagement and ensuring teachers and other facilitators are prepared to implement the solution themselves.
Evaluate the effectiveness of the solution in building literacy skills and motivation, measuring feedback from SMEs, stakeholders, and learners.
