When we initially took on this problem, we knew that there was a significant decline in children's literacy skills, and it was likely that COVID was the issue. We also suspected that the elimination of phonics in current curriculum was also a factor contributing to the lowered literacy rates. To investigate the veracity of these beliefs and get to the root of the issue, we chose to do our own background research on those topics, as well interview teachers and SMEs about their own observations, considering the following questions:
Is it actually COVID-19 that has impacted the literacy rates?
How has the absence of phonics impacted students' literacy rates? What impact does it has on their comfort and confidence in literacy?
What motivates students to engage with their literacy levels?
In order to best understand the scope of our learners' needs and potential solutions, we have participated in desk research, literature review, and stakeholder interviews. Our research process is iterative and ongoing--as we proceed to analyze our research and the information we've gained from our stakeholders, we continue to revisit and revise our design solutions for our learners.
What impact did COVID-19 have on literacy rates?
Is the substitution of phonics and addition of exploratory learning impacting literacy rates?
