Only elective courses are available for pass/fail grading. You are allowed to take a maximum of two elective courses as Pass/Fail. If you wish to take an elective course pass/fail, you must meet with your SSA to discuss this option and fill out and submit the Pass/Fail Grade Option form by the designated pass/fail deadline for the term.
Please note: Students can be reviewed for probation or warning if Incomplete grades make up more than 50% of their grades in a term.
You can request an incomplete grade only:
o Under exceptional circumstances and at the discretion of the instructor
o After the ninth week of the term and with 50% of the coursework complete
The instructor will determine the time you will have to complete the work, but it cannot be later than the last day of
classes in the following term. If you do not complete the outstanding work by the agreed date, the incomplete grade (I) becomes an F. F grades
cannot be removed or changed. If you complete the work within this time period, your instructor will consider it along with your other work to
determine your grade. You will not receive an extension beyond the end of the contract date. Incomplete grades may result in academic action by the Committee on Student Progress and failure to meet satisfactory academic progress by the Office of Financial Aid.

Transfer credit may be accepted for a maximum of 30% of a student’s total graduate program (note: this total includes any advanced standing previously approved upon initial matriculation). Please also note that a minimum of 24 credits must be completed in residence with a minimum of 18 credits at the 2000 level or above for master’s students and all 24 credits at the 2000 level or above for certificate students. Transfer credit may only be accepted from accredited colleges and universities. Course work may not have been applied to another degree and must have been completed within the last ten years with a grade of B or better. The form to request graduate transfer credit should be signed by the academic advisor and filed with the Office of Graduate Studies.
Clinical courses (lab, practicum, or internship) and Group Dynamics cannot be accepted as transfer credits; those courses must be taken at NYU.
Transfer Credit Review Process
Review and fill out the Transfer Credit Request Form.
Send the completed form to your academic advisor along with:
A copy of the syllabus for each course
An unofficial transcript
The department will review your materials to determine which classes will be approved as transfer credits or course substitutions. Your academic advisor will notify you about which transfer credits are approved.
After the departmental review is complete, you should request official transcripts to be sent directly to our Steinhardt offices. There are two ways to do this:
Preferred method: Request that an electronic transcript be sent directly to Student Affairs Administrator, Belkis Baez, by email at belkis.baez@nyu.edu.
Alternative: If electronic transcripts are not an option, you may request that the university send a hard, sealed, copy of the transcript by mail to your academic advisor. You may coordinate with your advisor regarding the appropriate mailing address.
