Let's travel!
Hello everyone, welcome to the fourth of my weekly posts.
I would describe the contrast between two trips that were fundamental in the
definition of the fabric of my childhood.
I traveled to London in 2011, a compelling year in the history of the city.
It was the year before the London Summer Olympics held,
the year His Royal Highness Prince Williams of Wales
wed the then Miss Catherine Middleton in the Westminster Abbey,
and the second warmest year on record for the UK.
I happened to visit the Westminster Abbey with my mum and brother, my companion's
on this trip, the day before the wedding, and witnessed the English set
up tents so they could stay over night to watch the wedding realtime.
I watched the wedding on TV though, and sure got a better view than the campers.
I visited the Trafalgar Square, the London Eye, ASDA
(a wholly owned subsidiary of Walmart), Legoland and saw an English cow.
This was a delightful trip and I learnt a lot about London.

In 2015, I travelled to Monrovia, Liberia to visit my Grandfather
who worked there at the time. The first contrast was obvious when I got onto the plane.
The make, model and age of the vessel was significantly different, and I wonder if it was
because it was traveling to an African country. The Roberts International Airport was tiny in
comparison to Heathrow Airport, and the built environment of the
countryside was still recuperating from the Second Liberian Civil War that ended in 2003.
I saw bullet and canon holes in a few walls and was stunned by the amount of
harm war brought.
My stay in Monrovia was delightful though as the people were welcoming and friendly after
trust was established. I stayed in a residential area very close to the beach,
the US Embassy, and two absolutely bougie hotels where we usually ordered pizza and lemonade from, but I went to sleep each night wondering how
I could play a role in the healing of Liberia and as many African nations that were still bleeding and convalescing from war, and collateral poverty.
