Hello everyone! Welcome to week 3 of my weekly posts.
Let's talk about housing in a Q & A format.
------
Do you live on or off campus? Why?
I currently live off campus. I made this choice because an apartment offers accommodation for a whole year
on a one-year lease, say from August to August. (Other lease arrangements are available)
A dorm (in NYU) offers accommodation for a one academic year (from Sept to May).
My parents didn't want me to have to move out in May and search for housing for the Summer.
Also, an apartment offers a cheaper yearly average cost for housing.
PS: Paying a lump sum for a dorm may be easier than paying a monthly rent depending on your spending habits.
If you live off campus, how far is your commute to campus?
23 mins when I time every train right... 30 mins otherwise, lol
Do prefer to live with roommates or live alone? Why?
I live with roommates. Why? So, we can split the rent!!
Make sure to pick suitable roommates!
Good roommates make good company and facilitate peace of mind.
How do you save money on expenses like rent or utilities? Give one or two examples.
-Splitting the rent helps.
-Managing laundry time (I have an in-unit washer and dryer)
Are there any housing sites that you find helpful?
Legitimate Facebook Housing Group Chats are also really helpful.
There are some specifically created to aid NYU students.
In 'hunting for an apartment', make a list of things that are important to you: proximity to campus, safe neighborhood,
affordable rent, good roommates, trees and parks in neighborhood, in-unit laundry, proximity of grocery and supermarkets
and rank them in order
of importance. This would help you filter out spaces and pick an apartment suitable for you.
