Dear Parents/Guardians
Greetings! It is my privilege to join the Nanyang family and helm the stewardship as the Principal for Nanyang Girls’ High School, and I am delighted to be on our girls’ education journey with you.
I have met our girls on the first day of school on 3 January, and I would like to share with you my thoughts when I saw them walking into the school hall in the morning. The hall was vibrant with our girls’ energy and they were all ready for the new academic year. Credit goes to both you and my school staff for making school and learning a safe and splendid experience that all our girls can look forward to.
May I also take this opportunity to introduce you to Ms Mabel Goh, who just joined us as Vice Principal (Academic Studies). Together with Ms Agnes Ng (Vice Principal/Student Development), Dr Liu Shiueh Ling (Vice Principal/Strategic Development) and Mrs Tan-Sim Joo Yee (Bursar), we look forward to continue having a strong partnership with you to provide our girls with the most enriching education. Our teachers take pride in nurturing our students into young leaders with a strong sense of agency and desire to make a difference to their community.
This year, we are inviting all parents back to visit us at the school campus during our Parents-Teachers meetings (PTM). After two years of having most communications and activities done online, we value this opportunity to meet you in person again. A separate invitation letter will be sent to you soon, and I look forward to welcoming all of you at our coming PTM.
Wishing you a wonderful year ahead!
Ms Siau Fong Fui
Principal
We write to parents/guardians regularly to update you on school events and developments. The information is sent out mainly via Parents Gateway (PG) and we seek the cooperation of parents to download the Parents Gateway mobile app to receive letters, notices and consent forms.
The NYGH Portal is another platform to access important information, such as slides shared at PTM and results. All parents of Secondary 2 to 4 students should have had access to the Portal. To ensure the effective dissemination of information, please provide us with an active email address, if you have yet to do so, by updating the email address on the Portal. This updated email address will be your new login ID. Parents of Secondary 1 students may do so after your daughters have received the login details in early January.
In addition, for dates on school events, you may access the school master calendar at NYGH Termly or via the school website under Quick Links. We have also gone paperless with an e-Student Handbook, which will be sent out in February. More information about the school will be covered in the e-handbook.
Please note that we observe a five-day work week. Our General Office is closed on Saturdays and activities on Saturdays are minimised. If there is a need for parents and students to contact our staff, please do so between 7am and 7pm on school days.
The safety of our students is of top priority. We seek your understanding and cooperation as we work together to ensure the safety of our students and to show consideration for nearby residents. Please note the following measures regarding both human and vehicle traffic:
We strongly advise our students to commute to school by public transport as the school is well-served by public buses and the Downtown Line.
Parents are to alight their child at the drop-off/pick-up point in front of the Auditorium Lobby. Please drive with care in the vicinity of the school.
Given high traffic congestion on rainy days, please set off earlier on such days for smoother traffic.
Please do not park outside the school (along Linden Drive) during the afternoon and evening pick-up period. This is hazardous to other road-users and violates the traffic rule, which prohibits waiting within the vicinity of zebra crossings. To alleviate the traffic situation along Linden Drive, parents’ vehicles are allowed to enter the school compound to park in front of Auditorium Lobby. However, parking space within the school is limited. Whilst waiting, please turn off the car engine as required by law.
The side gate along Dunearn Road is locked during school hours. On school days, the side gate is opened from 6.15am to 8.30am and from 2pm to 4pm. After 4 pm, students may exit the side gate using their student ezlink cards via the full-height turnstile.
Please continue to work closely with us in the implementation of SMM. We need the collective effort of all parents and students to exercise social responsibility so that our school stays safe.
We would like to highlight that if your child is feeling unwell with flu-like symptoms, please take her to see a doctor; she must not attend school until clearance is obtained from the doctor.
The School Health Service team will be at our school from 2 February to 17 February 2023 to conduct the annual health screening for all Secondary 1 and 2 students. Classes will be rostered during school hours for the health screening. Please note that students are expected to bring along their health booklets for the health screening exercise.
The Health Promotion Board will be offering the HPV vaccination to all female students in secondary schools. The vaccine used is Cevarix. The vaccination team will be at the school from 20 to 24 February 2023 to vaccinate the Sec 1-2 students.
Details will be sent via PG in early January to parents.
The school recently reviewed our practice of Dress Down Wednesdays. Uniforms give students a sense of belonging to the school and wearing the NYGH uniform (affectionately known as hongzi) with pride is an important part of being a Nanyang girl. The school will thus discontinue with Dress Down Wednesdays. On days when the students have PE, dance and drama lessons, they may still wear the school PE attire with the white skirt to school. The Year Heads and Form Teachers will address this matter with the girls.
To encourage work-life balance and also to allow students time to recharge and rest, the school will continue to implement protected breaks during the school holidays. No school activities will be conducted during these breaks, except for special arrangements made for students who are taking part in competitions in the early part of the coming term. The protected vacation dates are as shown below:
* The Secondary 3 level may have Saturday rehearsals during the protected period, in view of their involvement in National Day Parade 2023. Please refer to the section on National Day Parade 2023.
We are happy to share that NYGH will be participating in NDP 2023. NYGH’s last participation in the event was in 1999, which was a very memorable experience for that year’s cohort of student participants. To take part in NDP is a once in a lifetime opportunity and we are very privileged to be able to have all our Secondary 3 students involved in NDP 2023. The Secondary 3 students have been briefed about their participation during their orientation. More information will be shared with the parents at the coming PTM for Secondary 3 on 6 January.
HCI-NYGH Joint Conference and Workshop in 2023
Students will not report to school on Wednesday 15 February. On that day, all teachers will be attending the HCI-NYGH Integrated Programme Education Conference (HCI-NYGH IP Conference) for teachers. Students will be engaged with home-based learning to complete the assigned work for the subjects on their timetable on that day.
On Wednesday 22 February and Thursday 23 February (afternoon), NYGH and HCI will be having a joint workshop. Students will be assigned work for the subjects that are on their timetable for 22 February. On 23 February, students will still report to school in the morning, but there will be no CCA that day. Dismissal time for each level will be announced to the girls nearer the date.
Empowered Learner Day (ELD)
As part of the national effort to integrate active, engaging learning in the classroom with active, engaging self-directed learning from home, we will continue with ELD in 2023. However, we will only conduct ELD in Terms 2 and 3. More details about ELD will be shared with you later.
Our Chinese New Year Celebrations will be held on Friday 20 January and school hours will be from 8.15am to 1.00pm that day, with a special Chinese culture appreciation programme. Our General Office will be closed at 5.00pm. (There may be special arrangements by some CCAs to continue with afternoon CCA practices that day in view of approaching competitions and SYF, but the trainings will end no later than 5.00pm. Affected students will be informed by the CCA teachers.) Students will return to school on Wednesday 25 January.
We remember the less fortunate among us while we celebrate as a school this festive occasion. Students and staff are encouraged to contribute items to create hampers for our beneficiaries. We hope students will also donate a portion of their hongbao money for the needy.
On Wednesday 1 February, the 11th day of Chinese New Year, a staff lunch has been organised and the school day will end at 11.30am. (Students with afternoon commitments may be required to continue with their activities in the afternoon. They will be notified by their teachers separately.)
Secondary 1 students may continue to use their Primary School Smart Cards (SSC) for concessionary travel until end-April. While waiting for their Secondary SSCs to be ready, students may purchase the Bus Concession Pass for Secondary School Students using their Primary SSCs to enjoy concessionary travel.
The registration for National Registration Identity Card (NRIC) will take place in our school on Tuesday 21 February 2023. Students who are Singapore Citizens or Singapore Permanent Residents, and have attained the age of 15 years in 2023 are to register for their NRIC. Details will be sent to parents closer to the date of registration.
National Digital Literacy Programme
At MOE’s Committee of Supply Debate in March 2020, MOE launched the National Digital Literacy Programme (NDLP) for schools and Institutes of Higher Learning to help students strengthen their digital literacy. One component of the NDLP is the initiative where every secondary school student will own a school-prescribed Personal Learning Device (PLD).
All incoming Secondary 1 students can look forward to purchasing a PLD with this MOE initiative. More information will be provided later in Term 1.
Students who need financial assistance in purchasing the PLD may approach our school’s accounts department to enquire further after the dissemination of information.
Advice for Parents on ICT Responsible Use Policy (RUP)
To exercise appropriate, responsible and empowered use of technology, all students must endeavour to lead and assist others in building positive digital experiences, recognise that our actions have consequences to others and participate in the use of technology for the common good. In the coming weeks, we will engage all students in understanding the RUP for using technology in their everyday classroom and learning. The RUP can also be found in the NYGH Student Handbook. We will also make a copy of the RUP available to parents in due time, so that you may continue to have conversations on responsible use of technology with your daughter.
Publishing Photos and Videos for Publicity Purposes
Please be informed that photographs or video images of you and your child/ward may be taken during school activities and events such as classroom lessons, CCA, school camps, or school concerts. The school may use and publish such photographs or video recordings in school publications, the school’s website, social media channels, or other communication channels.
GIRO Deduction
Enclosed is the GIRO deduction schedule for the year 2023 (Annex 1). The school will send an e-mail to parents/guardians to inform you about the details of each GIRO deduction prior to the deduction date. Kindly ensure that you have adequate funds in your bank account on the scheduled deduction dates. For unsuccessful GIRO deductions, a $10 administration charge will be imposed.

The monthly full school fee rate for the different groups of students in 2023 is summarized in the table below.
Students who are recipients of the ESIS/BSP/CLE scholarship and students who are in AEP will continue to receive school fee subsidy according to the terms and conditions stipulated by MOE.
