The Northwestern Youth Center
The Youth Center, commonly called The Center by most, is a safe place for teens in the Northwestern School District. It is across from the post office and Shurfine in town and a half mile from the school. So it is a good thing to walk to after school. The Center is a non-profit organization where you can come and go as you please. It was temporarily closed due to ongoing renovations but officially reopened on February 6th. Its hours are 2:30 to 5:30 Monday to Friday. Before the renovations, around 20 students were coming every day. Since the reopening, it has increased to 25 students going every day.
There are several activities you can do there:
Football
Nerfwar
Dodgeball
They are hoping to add Archery and Music lessons. They also have Devotions that you can come to voluntarily if you want.
There is a computer that you can use to do homework. The Center is run by Bob Pettis who does quizzes if you need quizzes on a school subject. You can also receive points that you can trade in for prizes, like small TVs, drills, USB's, stuffed animals, and digital keyboards. You give points for doing a few things, like showing up and writing your name neatly on the sign-in sheet. It has many events going on throughout the year, one of the recent events was a Pizza and Nerf War. They are thinking about having a few parties in the spring, but they are not confirmed yet. They also have two weeks of summer activities, one week for elementary students and the other for middle school students.

Russian Women In Protest
By: Lochlan Warren
A group of wives in Russia are protesting to their president, Vladimir Putin, to bring their husbands home. They created a group on social media called The Way Home. The women in the group have differing opinions on the war, but they all agree on one thing: they want men to be brought back home to their families. The public speakers for the group have to choose their words very carefully because of Russia’s strict laws. If they say the wrong thing they could be punished by the law. The government and authorities do not agree with the women and Putin isn’t too empathetic towards their feelings. Members of the group have a local councilor, Boris Nadezhdin, to whom they speak and tell their stories. Mr. Nadezhdin is one of the few government critics who has been allowed on national television since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Russian women who are campaigning for the return of their husbands, sons, or brothers have faced a lot of criticism by the opposite opinion. They even invoke WWII into their arguments, saying, “'Can you imagine a delegation of wives coming to the Kremlin in autumn 1942 and telling Stalin: "Let those men who were called up in 1941 go home. They've been fighting for a year already." No-one would ever have thought of doing that.'” As of right now, the protests aren’t changing much, but the women have hope that if they push hard enough they will succeed in their cause.

It's a Madhouse
By Todd Walinger
Pioneer Drama Service
It's a Madhouse is about a family whose father passed away and sends them on a wild goose chase to find his fortune, but there is a catch - not only can the family be able to find the fortune, so can anyone who walks through the door.
This show, performed Friday February 2nd, Saturday February 3rd, and Sunday February 4th, was so fun to put on for everyone; we had a lot of fun at rehearsals and actually performing it. We enjoyed playing our characters and spending time with new friends that we made. Miss.O set some goals for us to accomplish, and we beat them even with a few people out and a few people playing more characters than originally. Some of our goals were we had to raise $400+, have fun, and not freeze on stage. It was an amazing show, and we had a lot of fun. Gerald was played by Perry Crane, Judith was played by Deanna Ransom, Pansy was played by Brooklyn White, Russell was played by Brian Yearwood, Abigail was played by Hallie Johnson, Grandmama was played by Lauren Salisbury
Flex Time
by Joe Schaukowitsch
Flex Time: Why Is It Helpful?
Flex time is a new school resource that gives students one period to devote to extra-curricular and school work every month. Flex can also give students a chance to connect, touch base with their teachers, get guidance, and get extra help if they need it. Flex Time is 30 minutes long, and if you use it wisely, you can get a lot done in that period. Also, if Flex Time goes well after its trial run, it could potentially be included more than once a month in our schedules.

ENergy Drinks
by Dave White
A popular trend in today's day and age is the purchase of energy drinks. Last year there were 84 billion energy drinks sold. The energy drinks market is expected to be worth $72.72 billion as of last year. The age of who buys the most energy drinks is 18-34 years old, and almost one-third of teens 12-17 years old drink them regularly.
When asked here within the hall of NHS, out of 31 kids in the halls most kids pick Monster as their number one choice. The second highest was Red Bull. The third highest was Reigh and in fourth place was Bang. These last 3 all had a total of 1 student choosing their brand; they were C4, Ghost, and Rockstar.
STudent Shoutouts
By: Braden Sabados
Part of January's Flex Time was allotted towards sending a shout out to peers throughout the halls of Northwestern High School. Here are January's shout outs.
It's Catchy...
by Mrs. Wood
At last month's Flex Time, students had the opportunity to share a spot of kindness about their fellow classmates. So often we fail to recognize the little things that those around us do to make us feel special, or recognize that a small act or kind word from us to another can make such a huge difference. It is easy to see that regardless of what negatives may be a part of the halls of NHS, there is much goodness and kindness as well.
A simple thing like a smile, a compliment, or randomly hiding cute little ducks around the hallways to brighten another's day, can make a big impact. I encourage you to see what happens when you take that extra step to spread some kindess.
Student Highlights
Interviews by Tyler Carr
For this edition of Student Highlights, I made a list of random names for each grade, and then crossed out names until there was only one name left per grade. Sometimes I repeated the process to get better results, including making sure there were two girls and two boys.
