Once in a Lifetime Solar Eclipse on April 8th

By: Tyler Carr

The total solar eclipse that occurred on April 8, 2024 was a once in a lifetime experience. Around 250,000 people visited Erie to watch the eclipse, almost triple Erie’s population of 94,000 people. The last time a total solar eclipse happened in Pennsylvania was in 1806.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth, completely blocking out the sun’s light. This is called “totality.” The only part of the sun that is visible at this time is the corona, the sun’s upper atmosphere. One thing during a solar eclipse that you must not do is look directly at the sun. There are special safety goggles that you can wear to shield your eyes. DO NOT look at the sun through a camera, a telescope, or binoculars. The only time you should look directly at the eclipse is during totality, where it is safe to look at.

TikTok is being banned?

By: Braden Sabados

This is the third time the U.S. government has threatened to ban the biggest social media app in the world, TikTok. Though it’s happened multiple times, people believe this threat is the most believable with Joe Biden saying that if this bill passed Congress, he would sign it; The bill seems to be a unanimous decision for TikTok to be banned. As said previously, TikTok is the biggest social media app in the world; it’s estimated there will be 2 billion active users on TikTok by the end of 2024 if it isn’t shut down. The site uses an almost addictive formula of scrolling through short-form videos and live streams. This type of short-form media has been said to have been detrimental to many children's attention span by having multiple videos, mostly gameplay, over the video. The main reason the Government has decided to ban TikTok is because they believe that the app can allow the Chinese government to access all the user's information, and influence the younger generation with propaganda, which I haven’t seen on my own for you page. TikTok was founded by Chinese entrepreneur, Zhang Yiming, in 2012 and was originally called Musicly; It became TikTok in 2018. It was an immediate success, garnering a little under 350,000,000 users in its first two years. As the years went on, the app started gaining the attention of small businesses where they would go to promote their products and/or services. This also became a place for new politicians to gain traction in their campaigns, which makes this bill all the more comedic. So long story short, TikTok is an app that contains a variety of entertainment and advertising, but has some downsides, like the declining attention span of children and even teenagers; the Chinese government theory is just that, a theory. In my personal opinion, I think it’s kinda useless to pass this bill. The world is in one of the biggest states of turmoil in a while, and the government has decided to focus on an electronic app.

Teen Fashion

By: Lochlan Warren

In the modern era, it can be hard to keep up with the new fashion trends. Teens dress differently to explore their identity and to express themselves. Style and comfort are big factors in a teen's clothing choices. Some popular clothing brands among teens are Vans, Converse, Crocs, Nike, Adidas, Champion, and Hollister. Popular styles consist of hoodies, crop tops, ripped jeans, oversized clothing, yoga pants, sweatpants, hightops, and sneakers. Recently it seems that 90’s trends are making a comeback in the fashion world. Styles like grunge- a style composed of  loose fitting clothing, ripped jeans, and band T-shirts, and hip hop have begun to become popular once again.

I conducted a survey to see what teens here at Northwestern like to wear. Here are some of the responses from participants:

I like to wear hoodies and sweatpants.

Anything loose fitting and baggy.

Anything black. Also Vans shoes.

Hoodies, yoga pants, sweatpants.

Hoodies, ripped jeans/skinny jeans, converse.

Hoodies, shorts, Jordans.

Crop tops, yoga pants, skinny jeans.

Hoodies and jeans.
