How to Fix Problems With Your iPad

There are many possible reasons why your iPad might be slow, unresponsive or crash unexpectedly. But, before you give up on completing your homework or throwing your iPad out the window in frustration, here are a few troubleshooting steps to try:

1. Close or "Quit" apps. Your iPad will continue to keep apps open—usually in a suspended state—even after you're done using them or have moved on to another app. So if you notice your device has become sluggish, closing some of those apps that are still running in the background can help. There are three ways to open the App Switcher:

2. Check your network. Some issues with your device could be related to your network connection. Make sure that you are properly connected to the correct wireless network (NTHS) and disconnect from any VPN services. If your signal is poor, you can try moving around the building (if allowed) to find a stronger signal. NOTE:  Make sure your non-NT devices (personal phones or laptops) are connected to NTHS_Guest.

3. Delete troublemaking apps. If you can pinpoint the app that is causing your troubles, it could be that it is incompatible with other apps on your device, or possibly that the app itself is corrupted. Deleting and then reinstalling the app may resolve your issue.

Hold a finger on the Home screen until all of the apps start to shake. Tap the minus (-) sign in the upper left corner of the app icon, then select Delete App in order to remove it. You can then redownload it from the App Store or Self Service, and see if you still experience the same issue.  ** Please note that deleting the app will also delete any data stored within that app, so back it up if possible.**

4. Restart the iPad. To restart your iPad, hold the increase volume button along with the power button together until you see the "slide to power off" slider. Swipe the power icon to the right to power down your device. After a few seconds, press the physical power button to start your iPad again.

5. Do a hard reset. Have you tried a "hard reboot" of your iPad?" Sometimes that's all it takes. Turning the iPad off and on can clear the available memory and possibly free up the resources needed to complete your work. Here is how to perform a "hard reboot" on your iPad.

6. Check your device storage. When working on large media projects, make sure that your device has ample storage, or you may run into errors when saving or exporting your work. Go to Settings>General>iPad Storage to see how much free space you have available, and how most of your storage is being used. Offloading unused apps can free up space while saving any data stored within those apps. Also check the amount of space your photos and non-educational apps might be taking up.

7. Contact the Helpdesk. If none of these steps work, bring your device to the Helpdesk at either campus (outside the library at Winnetka, inside the library at Northfield), email helpdesk@nths.net or call 847-784-2399.
