Shea H. is an extraordinary girl that has accomplished a lot of things! She’s an 8th grader that has made honor roll, and was a manager for both girls softball last year and girls basketball this year, Shea is also a member of the Unified basketball team. Wait, it doesn't end there, she helped raise money for the special Olympics! Shea raised $1,593 for the special Olympics. She raised the money by advertising on Facebook, and her family and friends helped her. I hope Shea inspires you and all eagles keep on soaring.
Joelle P. who is she? Joelle is a 6th grader, who not only plays basketball for our very own elm street team, but also several others. She is a girl of many talents but a few are art, acting (She was in Elm streets drama play), and Joelle plays the flute in the Elm street band. We have also been told that she is an amazing friend that is a kind person and inspires others everyday.
Jolina A., an 8th grader, is an admirable student! Participating and doing great in both woodshop, and art, she is an awesome role model for all students. At the start of the year, Jolina was scared to touch any of the machinery in the shop, but now, she is handling the biggest machines! When we asked Mr. Westervelt if he had anyone in mind for “Eagles Soaring High” he immediately answered: Jolina! Jolina is in Mx. Munz Art class and has created many great pieces of art during her time there. “Jolina puts meaning into her art. She is a great student!” Mx. Munz commented.
We know we are inspired by these students! Are you?
A Short Tidbit On Teachers
By Maya D.
There are plenty of teachers in our school. Here are some interesting facts about three of them. These extraordinary teachers are Sra. Pitsillides, Mrs. Wilson, and Mrs. Klayton.
Sra. Pitsillides teaches Spanish and exploring world cultures. It’s been a challenge teaching, having it being difficult with rotating schedules along with the requirement of wearing masks all day. She’s interested in crafting, biking, crocheting, photography, using her Cricut, and painting.
Mrs. Wilson teaches social studies. Teaching this year is quite different as we all try to adjust to this new thing we call normal. She is just happy to be able to be back teaching in person. Some of her many interests include traveling, cooking, and sewing.
Mrs. Klayton is the technology integrator here at Elm Street. She’s been having a great time learning about her new students. Mrs. Klayton went to Elm Street as a student in 9th grade, so it’s been fun and interesting for her to be back. She has interest in reading, yoga, watching whatever the latest streaming series is, and listening to Podcasts.
We sure do have plenty of interesting teachers here at Elm Street. If you think you know a teacher of whom is print worthy, please let them know of the opportunity to be in the next addition by contacting Mrs. O’Neil at oneils@nsd42.net
Responses to “Eagle Times Teacher Survey”
By Alice M-W
When a Google Forms document was emailed out, named “Eagle Times Teacher Survey”, 34 of these very helpful teachers answered and submitted the survey. 17 of the respondents were 6th grade teachers, 19 were 7th grade teachers and 17 were 8th grade teachers.
Question three was to ask which subject or subjects these teachers teach. Most (10) of these 34 teachers teach math. Other high numbers of responses were from science teachers (6) and English teachers (4).
Question number four and number five, and the last questions, “How many years have you been working here, at Elm Street Middle school?” and “How many years have you been teaching in total?”. The longest any of these 34 teachers has been working at EMS is 27 years, and the longest one of these teachers has been teaching in total is 35 years! Let’s give it up for all the teachers for dealing with us students for more than a day! Good job!
That concludes the responses to the “Eagle Times Teacher Survey”. Thank you to the teachers who responded.
Outstanding Team!
By Luke F.
The best seventh grade team is team 7-1. There are wonderful teachers on the team like Mrs. Rock O’Hara, Mrs. Gaffney, Mr. Allen, Mr. Baker, and Mrs. Seaborne. We have great times during field trips and team days. Each teacher is very special. This team stands out from the rest of the seventh grade teams because the teachers are just so much fun to have class with. In elementary school, you probably said “I hate school”. Well if you get this amazing seventh grade team, you will immediately change your mind. If you are currently on this team, you know how special this team is. If you are currently in sixth grade, hope you get this spectacular team. Every teacher brings light and will bring laughter to you. This is the best team ever!

Spring
By Luke F.
Spring is the time of year when the flowers, grass, plants, and leaves start to come back and is a great time to get off the TV and video games and get outside. It usually starts to get warm again in spring as well. There are many enjoyable hobbies to get into like gardening, fishing, planting, kayaking, etc. Spring is the best time to go hiking, biking, walking, and running in the woods. Spring is the season when the leaves start to grow back on the trees. So, turn off the TV and video games, get outside and breathe the fresh spring air!
Open-Ended Questions
By Alex H.
The Newspaper 1st edition Open-ended Questions was a great success! We got 95 responses!
One of the questions was about clubs at school. A lot of people wanted new clubs. There were some big responses, like a chess club and sports club. There were some that only one person wanted, like a news show for the school or a food club.
Another question was about teachers handing out candy during class. Most people also said they wanted teachers to give out candy, but some said “no” because of different reasons, including that It doesn’t help them that much.
Responses to “Eagle Times Student Survey”
By Alice M-W
When a Google Forms document was sent out, labeled as “Eagle Times Student Survey”, 192 of 949 students responded and submitted the survey. 122 of the responses were from 8th graders, 33 of the responses were from 7th graders and 37 of the responses were from 6th graders. We had at least one response from each team: yay! Top three placings for responses were team 8-1 (68 responses), team 8-4 (28 responses), and team 7-3 (20 responses).
A question on the survey asked about students playing sports. Out of these 192 students, 49 of them play a sport here, at Elm Street, 73 students who replied play a sport outside of school, and 86 do not play a sport (which is okay).
Question number four asked “Do you have siblings?” 15 respondents said, “I am an only child”. 47 respondents said they have half-siblings and 29 said they have Step-siblings. Lastly, 149 respondents say they have biological siblings.
When asked if they have a favorite teacher, on questions number five, the majority answer was “yes”, whilst 23 said “no”, and 62 said “uhhh...maybe?”.
Question number six, and the last one, is a big one. We all should know because our teachers have told us, phones are a big issue here, that’s why I had to ask a very important question: “Do you own your own individual smartphone?” Out of 192 of 949 students in our school that answered this question, about 19% do not have a smartphone of their own, 21% have Android smartphones, and 67% have IPhones!
Those were the questions and responses asked in the “Eagle Times Student Survey”. Thank you to the students who responded.

Finish your homework and extra classwork before doing anything else at home. It helps keep yourself efficient and time-friendly.
Try sitting down and taking out some study books for a few minutes everyday. It doesn’t have to be anything in particular, just maybe flashcards or your math book. Looking at Google Classroom also helps.
Another way to get really good grades in class is to focus in class. Just by paying attention in class adds up to your grade.
Talking with the teacher also helps, if you have a question or need help.
