The Secret of Water
↠ By Vedant P. ↞
Water is an essential part of our lives. We drink water all the time but have you ever thought that this plain transparent tasteless liquid may have the ability to retain information?
A Japanese scientist named Dr. Emoto has conducted many experiments on water since 1980. He conducted experiments where he would ask a group of participants to say nice words to a glass of water, and then quickly freeze the water and look at the crystallization of the ice. He realized that this produces beautiful crystals like snowflakes. However, when the participants said mean words to the glass of water, the crystals deformed. Dr. Emoto’s team repeated the experiment many times, and the result was the same every time.
Additionally, it was noticed that when the normal tap water was used, the crystals were deformed, similar to when people said mean words to the water but stream water (or unprocessed water from mountains) kept the crystal design intact just like when kind words were spoken.
All these experiments and more led scientists to believe that as water travels it picks up and stores information from all of the places that it has traveled through, which can thereby connect people to a lot of different places and sources of information when they drink this water, depending on the journey that it has been on.
More research needs to be done on how exactly the water is able to store memory.
For now, drink water mindfully and enjoy. :)

Hybrid Student’s Opinions of Learning Styles
↠ By Tara K. ↞
With the new hybrid change in our school, many students are happy. Some like the idea of staying fully remote, while others like going to school in person. We made a survey taken by over 80 Elm Street students, telling us which learning style they like best and why. About 68% of the total students surveyed said they liked hybrid learning, and 32% said they preferred remote. With this being said, let’s understand why these kids think this way.
Many kids prefer hybrid for various reasons, the main reason being, they think it’s easier to focus because there aren’t many distractions in the classroom. Another reason was they don’t have to stare at their computers every day for 6 hours straight. They also want to interact with friends and get to know their teachers, instead of staying home all day. One eighth-grader writes “I want to be able to spend the rest of the year with my friends because I'm going to a different high school than them.”
While they like hybrid learning, there are some things they think could be better or aren’t so great. Many students do not like waking up early to get ready and catch the bus. Students also argue that some teachers tend to pay more attention to in-person kids than remote kids. They also do not prefer to wear masks all the time and not being able to take them off. One unique answer was “I don't like when it is time to leave, that we get dismissed by floor. I am on the top floor and when I come down, the lunch is sometimes gone.”
Although the vast majority of kids prefer hybrid, some prefer remote. Many like the idea of staying home all day, and having less of a risk to catch covid. They also like not having to wake up very early for classes since they can just go to their computer for class. Some like that right after school they can spend time with family and pets instead of having to wait to get home. One student says “One thing I prefer about remote learning is that I get to learn at my own pace and can complete assignments once I understand what to do.”
There are a lot of downsides with remote learning too. The main reason some kids do not like it is because they do not like the idea of staring at a screen 16 hours a week. Many don’t like not being able to see friends when they are stuck at home. Some find it awkward when there are few class interactions, and the majority of class time is silent. One student says “If something happens with the computer there isn’t someone who can help and tell the teacher.”
Although there are some pros and cons with remote learning, it seems the majority of Elm Street students enjoy hybrid learning, and are hoping it continues until Covid-19 is over. They have more time to spend with friends, they get to know their teachers better, and overall they have a better learning experience.
Ways to Cope to Stress
↠ By Diya P. ↞
Do you get stressed easily? I do, and let’s say it happens a lot. I have a few ways of calming down that work for me, and they’ll hopefully work for you too.
These tips are called grounding. It helps when you're stressed, feel lost, when you are having a panic attack, or just can’t sleep.
One thing you can do is look around you. Find five things you can see, four things you can touch, three things you can hear, two things you can smell and one thing you can taste. Another thing you can do is think of your favorite colour and do the same- find five things you can see, four things you can touch, three things you can hear, two things you can smell and one thing you can taste. Then, take ten slow deep breaths, and decide what to do next.
If you're at home, you can lay on your back and think of being somewhere peaceful, like a flower bed, a cottage in the woods, or somewhere you feel safe and calm. Then, take deep breaths. It helps before going to sleep as well.
If you know how to find your pulse or heartbeat (in your neck or wrist) press two fingers where you can feel it, and take deep, slow breaths. Breathe out. It helps to focus on something else before doing something you're stressed for.
Lastly, breathe in for four seconds, hold your breath for seven seconds, and exhale for eight seconds. Then repeat once or twice more. This helps before panic/anxiety attacks, before tests and exams, before a presentation, or just when you’re stressed.
This helped me and I hope this helps you, remember you’re not alone <3
