In 6th grade, students are introduced to the fundamentals of coding and programming through the use of LEGO EV3 robots and LEGO Mindstorms software. They write programs to guide their robots through a series of challenges, building both technical and collaborative skills. Throughout the unit, students enhance their problem-solving abilities, work closely with a partner, and gain familiarity with technical vocabulary, the engineering design process, and applied math—all through engaging, hands-on learning experiences.

Students gain foundational knowledge of construction techniques by designing and building a truss beam bridge using only toothpicks and glue. Through this hands-on project, they explore key concepts in construction, engineering, design, and transportation. By the end of the unit, students will have developed practical skills and an understanding of structural design and forces by planning, constructing, and testing their bridges within material constraints.
