Climate change is, in my mind, the most pressing global issue. This is because, in simplest terms, we cannot live on a dead planet. In addition to this, many other global issues are connected to climate change. For example, poverty is one of the number one causes of climate change. This is because the main goal of people who are living in poverty is to stay alive - not to protect the planet. Also, the increasing rate of climate change is making those living in poverty more vulnerable to its effects.
Personally, I am compelled to take action against climate change because of the pure beauty of nature. I have been given the opportunity to grow up surrounded by the environment. I spent hours as a kid climbing trees, playing with bugs and frogs, and watching and taking pictures of as many animals I could find. This close connection with nature has allowed me to see the importance of protecting our environment. Allowing others to see this beauty is one of the best ways to slow down climate change because they are likely to want to protect earth after seeing its beauty, much like what I experienced as a kid.
I think almost everyone has heard of climate change and its effects. Despite this, it's not common to see people trying to help. This could be for a number of reasons: they think it's a hoax, they think they can't help or don't know what to do, or they simply don't care.
The first step in invoking genuine awareness in the public is educating people. Climate change is real, but many people refuse to believe this. More opportunities to educate people on the evidence of climate change and the importance of a healthy environment may help fewer people believe climate change is a hoax. Similarly, those who think they can't help or don't know what to do also need to be educated. There are many ways the public can push for laws and regulations regarding climate change and there are small changes they can change in their daily lives that can put less pressure on the environment.
People who don't care about the environment need to be given opportunities to explore nature. Many of these people have known nothing but a city. Supporting organizations that will take them to beautiful places in nature may help to make more people compelled to slow climate change.
