School Counseling Program

A comprehensive school counseling program is developmental and systematic in nature, sequential, clearly defined, and accountable.

The school counseling model includes four major components: the School Counseling curriculum that encompasses structured developmental guidance experiences presented systematically through groups (including classrooms) designed to promote growth of the psychological aspects of human development (e.g. self understanding, interpersonal relations, decision-making including career, goal setting and problem solving); individual planning which refers to the activities designed to help students monitor and direct their own learning and personal development. Individual planning includes individual advisement, placement and appraisal; responsive services which are reactions to immediate needs and concerns of individuals whether these concerns involve information, counseling, consultation, crisis intervention or referral; and program management activities which establish, maintain, and enhance the preceding three school counseling areas such as program development, materials development, parent programs, the testing program and community relations.

The Director of School Counseling is located in the Main School Counseling Office, on the first floor across the corridor from the Main Office. School counselors are assigned to one of three different house offices. As students progress, the school counselor remains responsible for the same students over a four-year period. If a student participates in the Career Academies program at the start of their sophomore year, they will be reassigned to the Career Academy counselor for their 10-12th grade year.
